Meta’s Aggressive AI Push Raises Investor Concerns Despite Strong Earnings

Meta Platforms, Inc. has released financial results for the fourth quarter of 2025 that surpassed market expectations. However, the social media giant’s announcement of a dramatic ramp-up in artificial intelligence investment has cast a shadow over the positive figures, signaling a period of significant capital expenditure that analysts believe will pressure profitability in the near term.

Quarterly and Annual Performance Exceeds Forecasts

The company reported Q4 2025 revenue of $59.89 billion, representing a 24% year-over-year increase. Earnings per share came in at $8.88, beating analyst estimates. For the full 2025 fiscal year, total revenue reached approximately $201 billion, marking a 22% growth rate.

This robust performance was primarily driven by Meta’s core advertising business. The company’s strategy of deploying AI-powered tools to enhance ad targeting and increase user engagement is delivering results, at least in the short term.

A Massive Capital Expenditure Plan for AI Infrastructure

Looking forward, CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlined an ambitious spending blueprint that has captured the market’s attention. Meta’s projected capital expenditures for 2026 are set to range between $115 billion and $135 billion. This represents a substantial jump from the $72.2 billion spent in 2025. The majority of these funds are earmarked for expanding AI infrastructure, with a significant portion dedicated to the “Meta Superintelligence Labs” initiative.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Meta?

Concurrently, the company provided revenue guidance for the first quarter of 2026, forecasting a range of $53.5 billion to $56.5 billion. The anticipated surge in spending is expected to weigh on the company’s margins, a key point of concern for shareholders evaluating the stock’s future trajectory.

Balancing Long-Term Ambition with Near-Term Pressure and Legal Scrutiny

Meta is unequivocally positioning itself as a leading contender in the AI arena. The technology is seen not only as a driver for further advertising revenue growth but also as a long-term catalyst for unlocking entirely new business segments.

Nevertheless, alongside these expansive plans, the company continues to navigate legal challenges. Ongoing litigation in New Mexico, focusing on the protection of minors across Meta’s platforms, remains an active concern.

The central question for investors is whether the potential long-term payoff from this aggressive AI offensive justifies the near-term financial burden, or if the company’s ambitious spending will undermine its financial performance. The quarterly results scheduled for early 2026 will offer the first concrete evidence of whether this high-stakes strategy is beginning to yield its intended returns.
