Rackspace Technology finds itself at a pivotal moment as its shares test crucial support levels. The cloud computing company is navigating significant leadership changes and disappointing quarterly results that have left investors questioning its direction. Despite the appointment of a new chief executive, the stock experienced a sharp 8.5% decline in yesterday’s trading session.

Financial Performance Pressures

The company’s second-quarter 2025 financial results revealed ongoing challenges. Rackspace reported a quarterly loss of $0.06 per share, falling short of analyst expectations of a $0.04 per share loss. While revenue slightly exceeded projections at $666.3 million, this still represented a 2.7% year-over-year decline.

A mixed operational picture emerged beneath the surface figures. The company achieved a 34% increase in non-GAAP operating income, reaching $27 million. However, this was overshadowed by a GAAP net loss of $55 million—a notable reversal from the $25 million profit recorded during the same quarter last year.

Cloud revenue segments showed uniform weakness, with Private Cloud services declining 4% to $250 million and Public Cloud revenues dropping 2% to $417 million.

Leadership Transition Under Scrutiny

Gajen Kandiah officially assumed the CEO role on September 3, taking over from Amar Maletira, who transitioned to Vice Chairman of the board. Kandiah brings extensive experience from previous leadership positions at Hitachi Digital and Cognizant, where he was responsible for scaling operations and artificial intelligence integration.

Market reaction to the leadership change proved decidedly negative. Despite an initial 1.3% pre-market gain, sentiment rapidly deteriorated throughout the trading day. Shares ultimately closed at $1.30, representing a significant 8.5% decline that suggested investor skepticism regarding the strategic personnel decision.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rackspace Technology?

Analyst Perspectives and Price Targets

Market analysts currently maintain an average price target of $1.63 for Rackspace shares, suggesting potential upside of approximately 15% from September 2 closing levels. However, BMO Capital recently revised its outlook, reducing the price target from $1.75 to $1.40 while maintaining a “Market Perform” rating.

Strategic Direction and Resources

Under new leadership, Rackspace continues to pursue its AI-first multicloud strategy, focusing on designing, building, and operating multicloud environments for artificial intelligence and data workloads. The company is leveraging partnerships with hyperscale providers and regional operators to drive business development.

With $414 million in available liquidity and a new revolving credit facility, management has signaled intentions to invest in AI and hybrid cloud initiatives. The critical question remains whether these investments can effectively counterbalance current revenue pressures.

Insider Trading Activity

A September 3 regulatory filing revealed that former CEO Amar Maletira disposed of 128,060 shares at $1.26 per share. The transaction was identified as a tax settlement event for vested restricted stock units, executed tax-free under Rule 16b-3 provisions. While technically routine, the timing has generated discussion among market observers about confidence levels within the organization.

As Rackspace shares test the critical $1.30 threshold, upcoming trading sessions will prove decisive in determining whether the new CEO can restore investor confidence and steer the company toward recovery.
