United Community Banks has captured market attention with a significant capital management move announced this month, highlighting the regional financial institution’s robust financial position and forward-looking strategic approach.

Dividend Growth and Shareholder Returns

Demonstrating ongoing commitment to shareholder value, United Community Banks’ board of directors approved a 4.2% increase in the quarterly cash dividend on August 14. The dividend now stands at $0.25 per common share, marking the eleventh consecutive year of dividend growth for the institution. This consistent pattern of returning value to shareholders complements other strategic financial measures undertaken by the management team.

Preferred Stock Redemption Strategy

On August 15, the company revealed plans to redeem all outstanding shares of its 6.875% Series I Non-Cumulative Perpetual Preferred Stock. Scheduled for September 15, this redemption will be funded through $88 million from the bank’s existing cash reserves. Each preferred share will be repurchased at $25,000, equivalent to $25 per depositary share.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying United Community Banks?

This strategic decision aims to eliminate higher-cost capital from the bank’s structure, thereby enhancing long-term profitability. By utilizing available cash rather than taking on new debt, United Community Banks demonstrates its substantial liquidity position. The elimination of the 6.875% dividend obligation is expected to improve future earnings available to common shareholders.

Strong Quarterly Performance Metrics

The capital initiative follows exceptionally solid second quarter 2025 results that underscore the bank’s operational strength:

  • Operating earnings per share: $0.66 (representing 14% year-over-year growth)
  • Net interest margin: 3.50% (14 basis point sequential improvement)
  • Loan growth: 4.2% annualized (excluding acquisitions)
  • Charge-off ratio: 0.18% of total loans (8 basis points lower year-over-year)
  • CET1 capital ratio: 13.3% (approximately 100 basis points above industry average)
  • Deposit costs: 2.01%

Established Regional Presence

With $28.1 billion in assets as of June 30, 2025, United Community Banks maintains operations across six southeastern states through its network of 200 branches. The combination of strategic capital management, consistent dividend increases, and strong fundamental performance indicators points to a disciplined financial approach focused on operational efficiency and sustainable value creation for investors.
