Investor confidence appears to be growing for Philip Morris International as the company intensifies its strategic pivot toward smoke-free products. This positive sentiment raises a compelling question for the market: can the current upward trend in the stock’s performance be sustained?

Strategic Shift Fuels Analyst Confidence

Market experts are expressing considerable optimism. Among the 23 research firms covering the equity, a significant 39% have issued a “Strong Buy” recommendation, with an additional 30% advising a “Buy.” Their collective analysis points to substantial upside potential, reflected in an average price target hovering around $195. For the full fiscal year 2025, these analysts project the company will achieve earnings per share of approximately $7.12.

Institutional Investors Increase Stakes

The bullish outlook is not confined to analysts. Major financial institutions are backing their sentiment with capital. Ninety One North America Inc. significantly boosted its position in the second quarter, increasing its holdings by a notable 13.5%. This move by a substantial player serves as a powerful endorsement of the company’s strategic direction. The confidence is well-founded, recently reinforced by Philip Morris announcing an 8.9% dividend hike, bringing the quarterly payout to $1.47 per share and highlighting its robust financial health.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Philip Morris?

Smoke-Free Products Drive Revenue Transformation

The core of this investor enthusiasm lies in a successful business transformation. The company’s substantial investment in smoke-free alternatives, exceeding $14 billion in research and development since 2008, is yielding concrete results. Products like the IQOS heated tobacco system and ZYN nicotine pouches are now major revenue contributors, accounting for 41% of total sales. This strategic pivot is demonstrably gaining traction with consumers, evidenced by a global user base surpassing 41 million adults who have adopted these alternatives to traditional cigarettes.

Key Dates to Watch

The immediate future holds critical milestones that could influence the stock’s trajectory. Market attention is focused on Friday, October 3rd, the ex-dividend date, which may generate short-term trading activity. However, the more significant test will come on October 21st with the release of the next quarterly earnings report. This disclosure will provide the clearest indication yet of whether the smoke-free strategy possesses enough momentum to power the next significant phase of growth for Philip Morris.
