JD.com Faces Critical Earnings Test Amid Institutional Exodus

The investment landscape surrounding Chinese e-commerce leader JD.com presents a contradictory picture as the company approaches a pivotal earnings release. Despite trading at fundamentally attractive valuation metrics, the stock faces significant headwinds from substantial institutional selling. All eyes now turn to the quarterly results scheduled for November 13, 2025, which will likely determine whether the shares can capitalize on their apparent value or continue their downward trajectory.

Institutional Confidence Wanes

Recent trading activity reveals concerning patterns among major investors. During the second quarter of 2025, while 218 institutional investors increased their positions in JD.com, a more substantial 301 institutions reduced their holdings. The most dramatic move came from FMR LLC, which slashed its stake by a remarkable 84.6%, divesting over 31 million shares valued at more than $1 billion. This significant reduction was mirrored by VOYA INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT and LAZARD ASSET MANAGEMENT, both of which nearly completely exited their positions.

Even political figures have been active in the stock: U.S. Representative Lisa C. McClain executed three separate transactions involving JD.com shares within the past six months. These collective movements signal growing unease among sophisticated market participants regarding the company’s near-term prospects.

Compelling Fundamentals Versus Market Skepticism

From a valuation perspective, JD.com presents an intriguing case for value-oriented investors. The company currently trades at a price-to-earnings ratio below 11 while offering shareholders a dividend yield of 3%. The fundamental strength was further demonstrated in their most recent quarterly report through June, where revenue surged by over 22% to approach $50 billion. Company leadership attributed this performance to “robust growth in user engagement.”

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying JD.com?

This combination of reasonable valuation and solid operational performance creates a puzzling disconnect with the cautious market sentiment and institutional selling pressure.

November Earnings: The Turning Point

The upcoming quarterly report, scheduled for Thursday, November 13, 2025, represents a critical juncture for JD.com’s stock performance. The company will release its unaudited third-quarter results before U.S. markets open, followed by a management discussion during an earnings conference call.

This event will serve as a decisive test: either the financial results will validate the current attractive valuation metrics and potentially reverse the negative momentum, or they will confirm the concerns that have prompted major investors to reduce their exposure. The fundamental question remains whether the Chinese e-commerce giant can deliver sufficiently strong numbers to break the prevailing downward trend and restore investor confidence. Market participants will have their answer in just ten days.
