American Water Works shares are currently navigating a significant downturn, creating a stark contrast with the company’s robust operational performance. While the stock price faces substantial pressure, the essential utility provider continues to deliver impressive financial results and maintains ambitious profit targets for the coming years.

Dividend Consistency Amid Market Volatility

Despite the stock’s recent challenges—registering a 10.5% decline over the past month—the company’s dividend policy remains unwavering. American Water Works continues distributing a quarterly dividend of $0.8275 per share, marking sixteen consecutive years of dividend increases. This track record positions the company with an attractive annual dividend yield of 2.6%.

Management has further reinforced confidence by reaffirming its 2025 earnings guidance of $5.70 to $5.75 per share while introducing initial 2026 projections of $6.02 to $6.12 per share. This represents approximately 8% year-over-year growth, demonstrating the company’s positive long-term outlook despite current market headwinds.

Exceptional Quarterly Performance

The third quarter of 2025 brought unexpectedly strong results for American Water Works. The company reported earnings per share of $1.94, surpassing analyst estimates by 2.65%. Revenue reached $1.45 billion, exceeding projections by a substantial 5.84%. Compared to the same period last year, when EPS stood at $1.80, the utility has demonstrated meaningful improvement, highlighting its operational strength and dominant market position.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying American Water Works?

Major Infrastructure Initiative in Pennsylvania

Significant growth potential may emerge from Pennsylvania, where subsidiary Pennsylvania American Water filed a rate increase request on November 14, 2025. This proposal supports a planned $1.2 billion infrastructure investment program extending through mid-2027. The substantial funding would modernize water and wastewater systems, including replacing 117 miles of aging water mains and removing lead service lines.

If approved, residential customers would see monthly increases of approximately $14 for water service and up to $20 for wastewater services. Regulatory approval represents a crucial milestone for financing these infrastructure improvements and could substantially enhance future earnings potential.

Analyst Perspectives and Technical Position

Market experts remain cautious despite the company’s solid fundamental performance. The consensus rating maintains a “Hold” position, though the average price target of $143 suggests 12.5% upside potential from current levels. Analyst expectations vary widely, with targets ranging from $124 to $160 per share.

From a technical standpoint, the stock remains in a short-term downtrend. However, the Relative Strength Index reading of 26.7 indicates potentially oversold conditions. The critical question for investors is whether American Water Works can capitalize on its strong operational results to reverse the negative price trend, or if further market skepticism must first be overcome.
