A Surprising Alliance and Record Sales: Amazon’s Strategic Moves

In a move that has sent ripples through the tech sector, Amazon is fortifying its market dominance through an unexpected partnership with one of its chief rivals. This strategic shift coincides with the company celebrating record-breaking Black Friday sales, presenting a multifaceted picture for its equity.

Record-Breaking Holiday Sales Momentum

Data from Adobe Analytics confirms Amazon’s continued retail supremacy. On Black Friday 2025, U.S. online commerce generated historic revenue of $11.8 billion, marking a 9.1% increase year-over-year. A significant milestone was reached as over half of all sales originated from mobile devices for the first time, highlighting the decisive shift toward app-based shopping. Notably, AI-powered shopping tools were a major driver, increasing traffic by approximately 800% and assisting consumers with price comparisons. Looking ahead, analysts are forecasting further record revenue of $14.2 billion for Cyber Monday.

An Unprecedented Cloud Partnership

Simultaneously, on December 1, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud announced a jointly developed multicloud solution—a remarkable development in an industry historically defined by fierce competition. This new technology links AWS Interconnect with Google’s Cross-Cloud Interconnect, allowing enterprise clients to privately connect both cloud environments via high-speed links in a matter of minutes.

Previously, establishing such an architecture required weeks of manual configuration and physical infrastructure installation. The automated system now provisions bandwidth seamlessly, secures data flows with MACsec encryption, and minimizes outage risks through fourfold redundancy across physically separate data centers.

Key strategic implications include:
* Greater flexibility for businesses to distribute AI workloads across both platforms
* A significant reduction in the risks associated with reliance on a single provider
* Anticipated substantial growth in the multicloud architecture market

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Amazon?

This collaboration may enable AWS to secure market share that might otherwise be lost to specialized multicloud providers.

Operational Challenges and Internal Dissent

Despite the sales surge, Amazon faces operational headwinds in Germany, its second-largest market. The Verdi union called for strikes involving roughly 3,000 employees across nine German logistics centers in an effort to secure collective bargaining agreements. The company has stated that operations remain unaffected, citing its workforce of 40,000 permanent employees and an additional 12,000 seasonal hires for the holiday period, with order fulfillment experiencing no delays.

Internally, a separate issue is gaining attention. Over 1,000 Amazon employees have signed an open letter criticizing the company’s rapid expansion of AI infrastructure. The letter raises concerns that the enormous energy demands of new AI data centers threaten Amazon’s climate goals amid a global “AI arms race.”

These concurrent events—a landmark partnership, record consumer spending, labor disputes, and internal environmental criticism—paint a complex portrait of the tech giant’s current trajectory.
