Rigetti Computing: A Study in Contrasts Amid Quantum Ambition

The quantum computing specialist Rigetti Computing presents a complex picture for investors, marked by significant technological progress set against a backdrop of persistent financial challenges and mixed signals from key market participants.

Financial Health and Technological Strides

Rigetti’s financial results for fiscal year 2025, released on March 4, illustrate the heavy costs of pioneering a frontier technology. The company reported an annual revenue of $7.1 million, while its operational loss for the fourth quarter alone stood at $22.6 million. This is characteristic of a deeply research-intensive enterprise. However, a solid liquidity position of $589.8 million as of December 31, 2025, provides the firm with a substantial financial runway to fund its next scaling phase without immediate pressure.

On the technology front, Rigetti recently achieved a critical prototype milestone: a gate fidelity of 99.9% at a speed of 28 nanoseconds. This level of precision is a fundamental requirement for building more robust and powerful quantum processors, representing a tangible step forward in hardware capability.

Divergent Moves by Insiders and Institutions

Recent weeks have highlighted contrasting actions from different classes of shareholders. Transactions filed on March 10 revealed that CFO Jeffrey Bertelsen and CTO David Rivas disposed of shares. Bertelsen sold 4,270 shares, while Rivas divested a larger block of 36,719 shares. Such sales by top executives are often scrutinized by the market for potential insights into management’s near-term outlook.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rigetti?

Counterbalancing this, clear institutional confidence has been demonstrated. During the third quarter, Clear Street Group established a new, substantial position in Rigetti. The investor acquired over 1.6 million shares, valued at approximately $47.8 million, signaling a strong vote of confidence in the company’s long-term trajectory.

Order Book and Forward Milestones

The company’s technological advances are beginning to translate into commercial engagements. A significant order from India’s C-DAC, worth $8.4 million, is for a 108-qubit system scheduled for delivery in the second half of 2026. Furthermore, Rigetti has secured orders for two smaller “Novera” systems valued at $5.7 million, with delivery targeted for the first half of 2026.

These upcoming deliveries represent the next crucial operational milestones against which the company will be measured. The stock’s performance year-to-date, down nearly 30%, reflects the broader uncertainty and high-risk nature of the quantum computing sector as it awaits these execution points.

Key Data Summary

  • FY 2025 Revenue: $7.1 million
  • Q4 Operational Loss: $22.6 million
  • Liquidity Position (12/31/2025): $589.8 million
  • India (C-DAC) Contract Value: $8.4 million
  • India System Delivery: Second Half of 2026

The path ahead for Rigetti is defined by the tension between its promising technological roadmap and the considerable distance it must still travel to achieve commercial profitability.
