Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Nio is pushing forward with a significant expansion of its signature battery swap infrastructure. The company has commenced testing of its fifth-generation power swap stations, setting the stage for a major technological leap scheduled for the summer of 2026. This infrastructure drive coincides with new initiatives to diversify revenue, including subscription models for its Onvo and Nio brands.

New Subscription Models and Revenue Streams

A key component of Nio’s growth strategy involves broadening its income sources beyond vehicle sales. The company has launched subscription services for its Onvo L60 and L90 models, as well as the Nio ES8, through the Alipay platform. Access to these programs requires a high score within Ant Group’s “Zhima Credit” system. Initially, this offering is available only in major metropolitan areas such as Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen.

This move places greater emphasis on the company’s service-oriented business, creating recurring revenue streams.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nio?

Fifth-Generation Stations Target Enhanced Performance

The upcoming fifth-generation battery swap architecture is designed to overcome technical limitations present in earlier versions. A central improvement is the support for varying wheelbases, which will make the stations compatible and more flexible across Nio’s entire model range. The company is targeting a capacity increase of approximately 20% with the new design.

Nio currently operates a network of more than 3,700 swap stations across China. It remains committed to its goal of constructing up to an additional 1,000 locations, with a focus on major highways and long-distance routes to improve nationwide coverage and convenience for users.
