Supermarket Workers Urged to Check Equal Pay Eligibility

Thousands of current and former supermarket employees across the West Midlands are being encouraged to check whether they may be entitled to equal pay claims against some of the UK’s largest retailers. The call to action, issued today, targets staff who worked at Asda, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons and may have been underpaid compared to colleagues in different roles.

The push comes amid growing scrutiny of pay equity in the retail sector, where predominantly female workforces in store roles have historically earned less than workers in warehouse and distribution roles — even when the roles are considered of equal value under UK law.

Record Executive Pay Gap Widens

The equal pay campaign coincides with fresh data from the High Pay Centre showing that the gap between corporate leaders and the general workforce has reached a new high. Median pay for FTSE 100 chief executives now stands at £5.06 million — an 8.6% increase from the previous median of £4.66 million.

The pay ratio between FTSE 100 bosses and the average UK worker has risen to 130:1, up from 124:1. While the typical worker earns between £39,000 and £40,000 annually, the top 10 best-paid CEOs are led by AstraZeneca’s Pascal Soriot, who received £17.7 million. In total, FTSE 100 companies spent more than £850 million on executive pay, with 66 out of 94 firms increasing CEO compensation.

Andrew Speke, interim director of the High Pay Centre, has called for reforms including potential taxes on high earners and greater worker representation on corporate boards to address the growing disparity.

What Drives the Gender Pay Gap?

While the supermarket equal pay claims focus on role-based inequality, broader research points to negotiation habits as a key factor in wage differences. A study from the Rockwool Foundation Berlin found that men are significantly more likely than women to use outside job offers to negotiate higher salaries.

The research suggests these renegotiations account for roughly half of the gender pay gap. Even when working in the same occupation and workplace, men earned 8% more than their female counterparts. Although the European Union introduced a Pay Transparency Directive in June 2026, researchers warned that legislation alone may not close the gap if negotiation disparities persist.

Retail Sector Faces Legal and Expansion Pressures

The retail industry is navigating multiple legal challenges over labour practices. In Australia, Aldi has proposed a $55 million settlement for a class action involving up to 32,000 employees over unpaid duties performed before and after scheduled shifts. The company has already paid $28.9 million, with a further $26.3 million awaiting Federal Court approval.

In the UK, Aldi continues its physical expansion, announcing a £370 million investment to open 40 new stores throughout 2026, creating 450 new store assistant positions. The supermarket, named the cheapest in the UK in June 2026, currently offers a minimum wage of £13.50 per hour.

As the sector evolves, financial expert Martin Lewis has also warned workers holding multiple roles to track forgotten pension pots through government tracing services. Some individuals have discovered overlooked accounts valued at more than £100,000.
