Alphabet’s Capex Test and Crypto’s New Rate Signal

Dear readers,

Oil is doing what oil always does when tensions flare: rattling everything downstream. Brent has pushed above $95 a barrel in recent sessions, reviving inflation worries just as U.S. index futures slip and investors brace for the first real gut-check of this earnings season. Tonight, two of the market’s most-watched companies report, a central bank meets tomorrow under conditions nobody expected six weeks ago, and crypto — of all things — is behaving like the market’s steadiest asset. The AI euphoria that has carried mega-cap tech for two years is colliding with a much older question: does the cash flow actually show up?

Alphabet and Tesla Face the Capex Reckoning

The heavyweights report after the close today. Wall Street has Alphabet penciled in for earnings per share of roughly $2.86 to $2.95 on revenue of $116.8 billion to $120.2 billion — solid numbers, but beside the point. The figure that actually moves the stock is capital expenditure. Bank of America now projects Alphabet’s 2026 AI infrastructure capex could balloon to $190 billion to $200 billion, a number that would have seemed absurd even a year ago and now reads as merely aggressive. Tesla, for its part, is bracing for its first cash burn in two years.

The message for anyone holding Big Tech: the era where a promising AI roadmap was enough has ended. What the market wants now is proof that these infrastructure bills can be paid down by real growth in software and consumer revenue, without margins quietly bleeding out in the process. Miss on cash flow, and no AI story — however compelling — will cushion the fall.

Crypto Shrugs Off the Oil Shock

What’s striking is how little of this turmoil has touched digital assets. Geopolitical tension in the Middle East is normally exactly the kind of shock that sends risk assets running for cover, yet Bitcoin has held its ground around $66,000, briefly touching $66,700, while Ethereum continues to defend the $1,900 level. The support isn’t sentiment — it’s flows. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs have now logged six consecutive days of net inflows, pulling in roughly $930 million over that stretch. Layer on expectations that the Federal Reserve holds rates steady at next week’s meeting — markets are pricing that at 94% — and you have a genuinely different kind of crypto trade: one anchored to real rates and global liquidity rather than to the fortunes of chip stocks.

The scale of adoption underscores the shift. Nearly 50 million Americans now hold Bitcoin, compared with roughly 29 million who own gold. That’s not a niche speculative asset anymore — it’s a mainstream allocation decision. For portfolios searching for diversification away from tech-sentiment swings, this decoupling is genuinely useful, provided ETF demand keeps absorbing whatever selling pressure oil-driven volatility throws at it.

A Central Bank Caught Between Gas Prices and Rate-Cut Hopes

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ethereum?

The European Central Bank meets Thursday, July 23, and the market is pricing a hold with better than 98% conviction. The deposit rate should stay at 2.25%, the level set after June’s hike from 2.00%. But the comfortable part of the story ends there. Houthi attacks in the Middle East are pushing up not just crude but European gas prices too — the Dutch benchmark is up 3% — at precisely the moment continental gas storage sits at just 53%, well below the five-year average. MUFG now expects one more 25-basis-point hike in September, which would push the deposit rate to 2.50%.

For portfolios, the implication is straightforward: the story of rates falling quickly and sharply is losing credibility. Bond yields staying elevated caps what investors will pay for pure growth, which is exactly why cash-generative businesses are becoming a portfolio necessity again rather than a defensive afterthought.

Industrials Prove There’s Life Beyond the Chip Trade

That’s already showing up in the numbers. 3M beat expectations with adjusted quarterly earnings of $2.40 per share against a $2.27 consensus, and raised full-year guidance to $8.80–$8.95 per share. GE Vernova posted order intake of $24.2 billion, an 88% organic increase, and lifted its own full-year targets alongside it.

Compare that to a tech sector where perfection is already priced in — AMD’s $5 billion Anthropic deal and Super Micro’s $60 billion order backlog are impressive, but they leave little room for a positive surprise. Industrials, trading at far more modest multiples, are where the upside surprises are actually landing right now.

The Takeaway

The next 24 hours will tell us a lot. If Alphabet’s capex commentary spooks the market and Lagarde sounds boxed in by energy prices, growth stocks face a rough patch while cash-rich industrials and rate-insulated crypto keep drawing capital. If Alphabet delivers and the ECB manages a dovish hold despite the gas-price pressure, the AI trade gets another lease on life. Either way, the days of assuming infrastructure spending automatically converts into shareholder returns are over — investors are now demanding the math actually work.

Best regards,
