Rate-Hike Talk Returns as Wall Street Chases Real Cash Flow

Dear readers,

Rate cuts were supposed to be the market’s next tailwind. Instead, two Federal Reserve officials spent Thursday floating the opposite: another hike, possibly as soon as September. That reversal lands just as investors are already rotating away from the industry that built this bull market — mega-cap AI infrastructure — and toward companies that can prove, in plain dollars, that the spending is actually paying off. Disney did exactly that today. SpaceX shareholders are about to find out what happens when a stock’s biggest lock-up evaporates into a market that no longer takes valuation on faith. And a quieter group of AI operators — the software layer that makes all those chips useful — is starting to look like the more durable trade.

The Fed’s Awkward Pivot

The backdrop hasn’t shifted much since Wednesday, when the ADP report showed private employers added just 44,000 jobs in July, and weekly jobless claims are still holding near 200,000 — hardly the picture of an economy that needs rescuing. What has shifted is the inflation conversation. The Fed left its benchmark rate at 3.50 to 3.75 percent at its last meeting, but Governor Lisa Cook and Chair Kevin Warsh are now openly discussing another increase, with core PCE inflation stuck at 3.3 percent, well above the two-percent target. That’s an uncomfortable combination for portfolios: a central bank that may need to tighten into a labor market that’s already cooling. Richly valued growth stocks are the natural casualty of that tension, which is exactly why the market’s hunt for inflation-resistant, recession-tolerant businesses is intensifying.

Disney Proves the Case for Boring, Profitable Businesses

Disney just supplied the clearest counter-example to speculative tech exposure. The company’s fiscal third-quarter adjusted earnings came in at $2.06 a share, comfortably ahead of the $1.86 Wall Street expected, on revenue that climbed 7 percent to roughly $25.2 billion. The Parks and Experiences division did the heavy lifting, with revenue up 10 percent to nearly $10 billion, while the streaming business posted a solid 13 percent operating margin — proof that the years of subscriber-chasing losses are giving way to actual profitability. Management also raised its full-year buyback target to at least $9 billion. In a market where mega-cap tech earnings calls have become referendums on capital discipline, investors are rewarding the companies that already have pricing power and are handing cash back to shareholders rather than promising future payoffs.

SpaceX Faces Its First Real Supply Test

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SpaceX?

SpaceX’s post-IPO honeymoon runs into its first hard mechanical test today, as the initial lock-up period expires and roughly 911 million shares — about 7 percent of shares outstanding — become tradable. That’s a larger float unlock than the entire amount sold in June’s IPO. The stock has already shed more than half its value from the post-listing high above $225, and this fresh supply arrives with no guarantee of matching demand. Traders looking to play the volatility now have a new tool: the newly launched Direxion Daily SpaceX Bear 2X ETF (ticker LOFD), which lets investors bet against short-term declines or hedge existing exposure. The IPO enthusiasm is colliding with the more prosaic mechanics of supply and demand.

The Second Tier of AI Is Where the Real Margins Are

Beneath the hyperscalers, a different set of AI winners is emerging — and they’re not the ones selling chips. Investor attention is shifting from the capital-intensive hardware race toward the software and infrastructure layer that makes all that hardware efficient. SoundHound AI shares jumped 24 percent after posting record second-quarter revenue. In the private markets, Israeli startup PointFive just raised $60 million on the strength of a platform that helps enterprises cut runaway cloud spending by roughly 30 percent. Even SoftBank benefited from this efficiency-over-ambition mood: the firm posted a surprise quarterly profit of $2.2 billion, driven largely by a sharp gain in the value of its Intel stake, while its pure AI-research bets like OpenAI appear to be taking a back seat in the portfolio. The next leg of the AI trade looks less like a hardware arms race and more like a margin story — B2B software vendors turning expensive infrastructure into measurable savings for their customers.

The Bottom Line

The coming days hinge on the next U.S. jobs report, which will either validate the Fed’s inflation worries or hand it fresh evidence that the labor market is cooling fast enough to keep hikes off the table. Until that’s clear, the smart move is to lock in gains on the purest AI-infrastructure bets and rotate capital toward businesses proving their worth through operational efficiency, disciplined buybacks, and margins that don’t depend on a rate-cut promise to hold up.

Best regards,
