Atlassian’s €128.80 Spike: A Profitability Inflection Point Arrives Just as Growth Slows

The software maker that spent years convincing investors to look past red ink finally handed them a reason to cheer. Atlassian’s fourth-quarter results, released Friday, sent the stock soaring 34.87% to close at €128.80 — a move that recast the entire narrative around the company’s cloud transition and its long road to profitability.

The headline number that did the heavy lifting: a GAAP net profit of $139.1 million, a milestone after years of net losses. The operating margin hit 12% in the final quarter, and the market treated that as the proof of sustainability it had been waiting for. On the week, the stock is up 47.03%, and over the trailing 30 days it has gained 72.19%.

Yet the rally masks a more complicated picture. Despite Friday’s surge, the shares remain down 7.43% on the year and still sit 20.52% below the 52-week high of €162.06. The question now is whether this marks the start of a durable re-rating or a sharp, short-lived reprieve.

The Bull Case: Cloud Momentum and a CEO Putting Money Where His Mouth Is

Revenue for the quarter came in at $1.766 billion, up 28% year over year and comfortably ahead of the $1.663 billion analysts had penciled in. The cloud segment — the company’s primary growth engine — accelerated to 31% growth, a pickup from prior quarters. GAAP operating income swung from a loss in the year-ago period to $211 million, with the operating margin climbing to 36% from 24%.

Perhaps the most telling indicator of future demand: remaining performance obligations jumped 44% to $4.8 billion, signaling a pipeline that has yet to fully translate into recognized revenue. Free cash flow landed at $475 million.

Adding to the bullish momentum, co-founder and CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes announced plans to purchase up to $250 million worth of shares through a structured trading plan. That insider signal, combined with the earnings beat, drew a wave of analyst revisions. TD Cowen lifted its price target to $145 from $105 but kept a neutral stance. BTIG moved to $180 and Jefferies to $200, both with buy ratings.

The average analyst price target now sits at €121.41 — roughly 5.7% below Friday’s close — suggesting the professional consensus sees the stock as modestly overvalued at current levels.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Atlassian?

The Bear Case: A Growth Cliff and a Stretched Chart

The optimism comes with a significant caveat: management’s own guidance points to a sharp deceleration. Revenue growth is expected to fall from 26% in the past fiscal year to around 13% in fiscal 2027. The data-center segment is the sore spot, with a projected 17% decline as customers are pushed toward cloud offerings.

Technical indicators add to the caution. The 14-day relative strength index sits at 78, deep in overbought territory, while the annualized 30-day volatility exceeds 125% — a level that historically precedes sharp pullbacks. The stock’s recent run has been extraordinary, but the risk of a violent reversal is baked into the tape.

There’s also an operational wrinkle: the recently disclosed “RovoBlast” security vulnerability in the company’s AI assistant serves as a reminder that the aggressive push into artificial intelligence carries its own set of risks. And if the anticipated growth slowdown in 2027 coincides with margin compression — say, from heavier AI infrastructure spending — the current enthusiasm could fade quickly.

The Reconciliation: What the Next Quarter Will Tell

The central tension is straightforward. Atlassian has finally demonstrated it can generate meaningful GAAP profits, and its cloud business is firing on all cylinders. But the company is simultaneously guiding toward a much slower growth trajectory, and its data-center business — once a reliable contributor — is now in managed decline.

The €121.41 analyst target offers a rough line in the sand. A sustained move below that level would suggest the post-earnings euphoria is cooling. The next real test comes with the fiscal first-quarter report, when investors will see whether the projected “sharp slowdown” is conservative guidance or the new reality.

For now, the market has chosen to celebrate the profitability breakthrough. Whether that celebration extends beyond a single session depends on Atlassian’s ability to keep margins expanding even as growth decelerates — and to prove that the cloud transition, now years in the making, can carry the company through the slower patch ahead.
