Nvidia Falls, Salesforce Soars: AI’s Profit Line Redraws

Dear readers,

Yesterday we watched Kevin Warsh open his Jackson Hole keynote and asked how markets would take it. The verdict is now in, and it isn’t kind to anyone still betting on a September pause. The S&P 500 closed essentially flat on Friday, but that stillness was an illusion — a handful of mega-cap names did all the lifting while the broader market absorbed real damage underneath. The split has a name: rate fear is back, and it’s forcing a much sharper line between AI’s hardware winners and its software profiteers than investors have had to draw in months.

Nvidia’s Best Quarter, Worst Day

Start with the paradox. Nvidia’s results demolished even the most aggressive estimates — revenue roughly doubled year over year, guidance hit fresh records, and the new chip generation is already shipping at volume. The market briefly rewarded that with a $441 billion jump in market capitalization, a genuinely historic single move. And then the stock closed Friday down about 4 percent, at €187.78.

That gap between the news and the price is the story of this market right now. One wobbly session in a growth name, and traders start litigating the entire AI trade instead of just the stock. It’s an overreaction that mistakes valuation jitters for a thesis problem. Investors who bail at the first flinch have historically handed their returns to whoever stayed put — Nvidia itself has suffered drawdowns of more than 60 percent before, only to reclaim new highs later. Getting rattled by hardware volatility means losing sight of the underlying demand curve, which hasn’t changed.

Salesforce Shows Where the Real Margin Lives

If Nvidia is the infrastructure bet, Salesforce is proof the next, higher-margin leg of AI is already being monetized. Friday’s print — $11.35 billion in quarterly revenue — was strong on its own, but the number that mattered was buried in the AI agents segment: annual recurring revenue there surged 240 percent to $1.5 billion. The launch of “Claudeforce,” built with Anthropic, pushes AI directly into customers’ data workflows rather than leaving it as a bolt-on feature.

The market has noticed. Salesforce shares are up 34 percent over the past 30 days and closed Friday at €221.30. That’s the clearest signal yet that AI monetization has moved past the infrastructure-buildout phase into the applications layer — and right now, the best margins in the trade sit there, not at the chip foundries.

Warsh’s Inflation Warning Hardens by the Hour

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nvidia?

Away from earnings, the Fed did the heavy lifting on sentiment. Warsh used his Jackson Hole remarks to warn, more bluntly than markets expected, that inflation isn’t cooling on schedule — July’s PCE reading came in at 3.7 percent, still well above the Fed’s 2 percent target. The reaction was immediate: odds of a September hike, which stood near 30 percent just a day earlier, jumped to 57 percent, and the two-year Treasury yield spiked to 4.30 percent.

Rate-sensitive assets took the brunt of it. Bitcoin tried and failed to break $81,000, sliding back to roughly $77,500 over the weekend. Neither the roughly $3 billion in August spot-ETF inflows nor a heavy options expiration was enough to hold the line. The lesson for crypto investors is blunt: right now, macro data and liquidity conditions are outmuscling institutional demand, full stop.

China’s Property Wound Won’t Close

Halfway around the world, the stress is homegrown. China Vanke, once considered one of the sturdiest names in Chinese real estate, reported a first-half net loss of ¥16 billion — about $2.4 billion — while short-term, interest-bearing liabilities climbed more than 15 percent to nearly ¥179 billion. Sales are falling and the debt load keeps rising anyway, a combination that doesn’t resolve itself quietly. The stock has lost 24 percent year-to-date and closed Friday at HK$2.48, a scoreboard that leaves little room for optimism. Anyone positioning for a fast China rebound should treat Vanke’s numbers as a reminder that the property sector remains a structural drag capable of turning cheap valuations into permanent ones.

Washington Puts Its Thumb on the Aluminum Scale

Back in the U.S., the Pentagon just underlined how far governments will go to protect strategic supply chains. The Department of Defense is putting another $100 million into Atlantic Alumina Company (Atalco) to keep America’s last domestic alumina refinery running, part of a combined package — with private capital — worth hundreds of millions aimed at reaching 1.2 million tons of annual capacity and cutting the country’s 60 percent import dependence. Century Aluminum is riding the same tailwind, up 18 percent year-to-date and trading at €39.74. When national-security priorities collide with scarce industrial inputs, they tend to build in a price floor that softens the sector’s usual boom-bust cycle — a rare source of ballast for commodity investors right now.

The Takeaway

The week closes with a market that’s demanding investors pick a side. Software names are proving the AI trade can generate real, durable margin; strategic materials are getting a floor from government spending; but rate risk is back in the driver’s seat, and it’s punishing anything priced for perfection — from bitcoin to Chinese property to a single soft session in Nvidia. Buying the index and hoping macro stays quiet isn’t a strategy anymore. Selectivity is.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend,
