BASF Presses Its Advantage on Multiple Fronts: Price Hikes, New Capacity, and a Patent Fight With Apple

The German chemical giant is making moves that touch everything from specialty intermediates to the courtroom of a Texas patent dispute. While the market’s reaction has been muted, the underlying strategy points to a company actively repositioning itself for higher-margin growth.

At the heart of the operational news is the official commissioning of a comprehensively modernized plant for acid chlorides and chloroformiates at BASF’s flagship Ludwigshafen site, announced on Wednesday. These chemical precursors serve as building blocks for the pharmaceutical and agricultural chemical sectors, as well as specialized applications. The investment signals that Ludwigshafen, despite years of corporate restructuring, remains central to the group’s production blueprint. For shareholders, the takeaway is clear: capital is flowing into profitable niche segments rather than relying solely on commodity chemicals.

That focus on margin is reinforced by a fresh round of pricing action. Effective September 1, BASF implemented price increases for caprolactam, polyamide 6, and polyamide-6/66 copolymers in North America, alongside hikes for neopentyl glycol in both Europe and North America. These moves follow announcements made in late August for similar product lines, including nylon-6. The ability to push through price increases in select categories stands in contrast to the industry-wide price erosion that has weighed on results in recent quarters, suggesting a degree of pricing power that investors will be watching closely.

The innovation narrative received external validation last week when BASF was honored with the Ringier Technology Innovation Award for its surfactant Plantapon Amino ASP, recognized in the Functional Chemicals – Surfactants category. The accolade underscores a broader pivot toward specialty, technology-driven products that can command better margins than the group’s traditional volume businesses.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BASF?

Yet the most attention-grabbing development came via the legal route. BASF’s sensor technology subsidiary, trinamiX, filed a lawsuit on Thursday in the U.S. District Court in Midland, Texas, accusing Apple of infringing seven patents related to facial authentication. The complaint, filed under case number 7:26-cv-00348, targets the Face ID technology embedded in the iPhone 15, 16, and 17 models, as well as the iPad Pro. trinamiX is seeking an injunction, though no specific damages figure was stated in the filing. Midland’s federal court has long been a favored venue for patent litigation against major tech corporations.

The financial stakes are considerable. Apple generated roughly $196.5 billion in iPhone revenue alone during the nine months ending June 27, with iPads contributing an additional $21.7 billion. A favorable ruling for trinamiX could open the door not just to damages but to ongoing licensing revenue from one of the world’s largest consumer electronics ecosystems. Still, patent battles of this magnitude typically stretch over many months or years, and the outcome remains highly uncertain. For BASF shareholders, the case is best viewed as a potential upside option rather than a near-term catalyst — the share price barely registered the news, moving just a few percentage points on the day of the announcement.

The stock’s recent trajectory, however, tells a story of quiet resilience. The shares closed Friday at €53.33, down a marginal 0.2 percent on the day, yet up 1.8 percent over the course of the week and 5.3 percent over the past 30 days. The equity now trades roughly 6.7 percent above its 50-day moving average and sits just 3.1 percent below its 52-week high of €55.05. It also remains comfortably above its 200-day average of €48.89, underscoring a broadly healthy technical picture.

The legal wrangling with Apple adds a layer of optionality to a year that has already seen BASF deliver on several operational fronts, including the completed separation of its coatings business and an upgraded earnings outlook. The patent dispute itself is unlikely to move the needle in the near term — neither the potential damages nor the timeline are knowable at this stage. But should trinamiX prevail, the licensing upside could become a meaningful new revenue stream. For now, the combination of fresh capacity in Ludwigshafen, disciplined price increases, and recognition for product innovation provides the fundamental foundation for the share price strength seen in recent weeks.
