Xiaomi’s Dual Offensive: A September Product Blitz Meets a Patient European EV Strategy

The numbers tell a story of contradiction. Xiaomi’s shares closed Friday at €3.11, up 2.4 percent on the day in Frankfurt, yet the stock remains 28 percent in the red year-to-date and sits a staggering 52 percent below its 52-week high of €6.54, reached last September. For a company that just crammed an extraordinary amount of news into a single week — a European dealer sweep, a flagship chip launch, and a foldable phone debut — the market’s muted response speaks volumes about investor skepticism.

That skepticism is not without foundation. Bernstein analysts trimmed their price target for Xiaomi from HK$43 to HK$38 in mid-August, though they maintained an “Outperform” rating. The house also cut its target for rival BYD from HK$136 to HK$130, while still calling it a top pick in China’s EV sector. The rationale for continued confidence in Xiaomi rests on valuation math: the forward price-to-earnings ratio for 2027 stands at roughly 16, well below the historical average of 25. Bernstein interprets that discount as evidence that the market has yet to fully price in the company’s long-term potential — even after a period of underwhelming share performance.

A September Showcase Built on Silicon

The immediate catalyst for attention is a product calendar so dense that CEO Lei Jun has branded the month a “Big Tech Month.” On September 7, Xiaomi will unveil the Xiaomi 18 Fold and the Xiaomi Pad 9 Pro Max in China, both marking the debut of the company’s new in-house chip, the Xring O3. That processor is part of a broader semiconductor family that also includes the O100 and D100 models, signaling an ambitious push toward silicon independence.

The timing is no accident. By clustering multiple product lines into a single month, Xiaomi appears intent on maximizing media attention while simultaneously telegraphing a reduced reliance on external suppliers. The messaging extends to memory components as well: Reuters reported in late August that Chinese manufacturer CXMT will supply the storage chips for the upcoming foldable — a move Xiaomi confirmed via its official Weibo channel. The pairing of a proprietary processor with a domestic memory partner fits a broader strategy of anchoring supply chains closer to home.

September 7 is merely the opening act. Later in the month, the Xiaomi 18 Pro series is slated for a China launch, and unconfirmed reports suggest those devices could feature Qualcomm’s next-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro chip. Xiaomi has not officially verified that detail, but if true, the company would be deploying both its own silicon and Qualcomm’s latest hardware across different product tiers within a matter of weeks.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Xiaomi?

Europe Beckons, Regulatory Questions Linger

While the product offensive unfolds in China, Xiaomi’s automotive ambitions are quietly advancing in Europe. At the IFA trade fair in Berlin in early September, the company signed letters of intent with eight German dealer groups. The official European market entry is scheduled for 2027, with test drives already underway at seven locations across Sweden, Germany, Spain, and Italy — including the Nürburgring.

Yet significant regulatory hurdles remain unresolved. Reports indicate Xiaomi has not yet applied for EU type approval, and the company has yet to establish a legal representative within the bloc. Tariff classification also hangs in the balance: depending on how vehicles are categorized, the duty differential on a €50,000 car could amount to roughly $8,000 — a swing substantial enough to reshape pricing strategy.

The home market tells a different story of operational momentum. Since March 2024, Xiaomi has delivered more than 700,000 vehicles cumulatively in China, with the SU7 model surpassing 500,000 deliveries in just 28.5 months. The financial picture, however, remains a drag: in the second quarter of 2026, the segment encompassing both automotive and AI activities posted a loss of 2.6 billion yuan.

The AI Investment Thesis

Beyond cars and phones, artificial intelligence has emerged as a strategic pillar. Research and development spending climbed 33.4 percent year-over-year in the first quarter of 2026 to 9 billion yuan, with more than 26,000 employees now working in the R&D division. The company’s in-house language model, MiMo-V2.5-Pro, ranks first globally among open-source models according to Artificial Analysis. Lei Jun has pledged 60 billion yuan in AI investment over the next three years, with the stated goal of unifying smartphones, vehicles, and smart-home products on a shared AI platform.

The stock’s trajectory suggests investors are withholding judgment until the strategy translates into sales. Over the past 30 days, shares have managed only a 1.7 percent gain — hardly a vote of confidence for a company unleashing its most aggressive product and expansion push in years. The coming weeks, with launch events on September 7 and again later in the month, will offer the first concrete evidence of whether this multi-front strategy resonates with both customers and the market alike.
