Marvell’s October Reckoning: A Stock Caught Between Nvidia’s Tailwinds and Google’s Long Fuse

The reflex is almost mechanical by now. When a billion-dollar deal breaks anywhere in the artificial-intelligence chip universe, investors scan the sector for whoever stands to benefit — and Marvell Technology keeps getting swept up in the updraft.

Friday was a case in point. The custom-chip specialist saw its shares climb 7.2 percent, closing at €192.48. The immediate catalyst wasn’t anything Marvell itself announced, but rather Nvidia’s $12.9 billion agreement to acquire Hugging Face, a move that solidified the graphics-chip titan’s position in the open-source AI model ecosystem. Traders promptly transferred that enthusiasm to Marvell, a pattern that has become almost reflexive whenever a major transaction surfaces in the AI hardware space.

Yet the sympathy rally masks a more complicated picture. Marvell’s relationship with Nvidia runs far deeper than market sentiment. The two companies are already tightly intertwined: Nvidia holds a $2 billion stake in the custom-chip specialist, and they jointly collaborate on silicon photonics while working to make their respective technologies interoperable. For customers, that means building AI infrastructure on Marvell’s XPUs alongside Nvidia’s NVLink ecosystem is becoming increasingly seamless — and when the larger partner’s fortunes rise, so does the speculative appeal of the smaller one.

The Numbers Tell a Stronger Story Than the Stock Price

What makes Friday’s jump notable is that it followed a period of genuine skepticism. Marvell’s second fiscal quarter delivered revenue of $2.74 billion, up 37 percent year over year, with the data-center segment surging 46 percent to $2.17 billion — roughly 79 percent of total sales. Earnings per share came in at $0.94.

Management subsequently lifted its full-year guidance: revenue growth of approximately 45 percent to around $12 billion for the current fiscal year, with the data-center business expected to expand by roughly 60 percent, up from the previously targeted 50 percent. The company also raised its 2028 target by nearly 10 percent, now projecting $18 billion in revenue.

The stock initially reacted to those results with a decline, and the culprit was margin pressure. The company guided third-quarter adjusted gross margin to a range of 57.5 to 58.5 percent — below the 58.9 percent reported in the most recent quarter. In a stock already trading at a premium valuation, that kind of detail carries more weight than it might in calmer conditions. Growth at any price requires an explanation for why profitability is ticking slightly downward.

The Google Question Looms Largest

The central issue for investors isn’t really the past quarter — it’s the pace at which Marvell’s partnership with Google translates into revenue. The collaboration with Alphabet envisions cumulative revenue of $120 billion through 2033, tied to warrants valued at approximately $12.2 billion, representing 6.6 percent of equity. Under the arrangement, the cloud giant can receive stock options worth up to that amount in exchange for hitting revenue milestones.

But here’s the tension: meaningful revenue from the Google chip partnership isn’t expected until fiscal 2029. Until that stream materializes, the market is valuing Marvell largely on its existing data-center business — and that’s where near-term sentiment will be decided.

The stock currently sits about 34 percent below its 52-week high of €290.35, reached in early summer. Annualized volatility stands at 88 percent, and the 30-day volatility figure mirrors that turbulence. The RSI of 50.8 signals neither overbought nor oversold conditions — a market searching for direction.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Marvell Technology?

Wall Street Remains Divided on the Path Forward

Analyst opinions diverge sharply on where Marvell goes from here. RBC’s Srini Pajjuri sees Marvell as the more attractive pick among AI semiconductor names — ahead of even Broadcom — with a price target of $360, implying upside of roughly 72 percent from his base level. Craig-Hallum raised its target to $300 on August 28, while BofA is even more aggressive at $365. Wolfe Research reaffirmed its rating in late August with a $280 target.

The broader consensus across 44 analysts surveyed stands at “Strong Buy,” though the average price target varies depending on the survey — one compilation puts it at $284.80, another at $265.76. The optimism rests on expectations that gross margin will climb into the 57.5 to 58.5 percent range next quarter and that data-center growth will continue at around 60 percent.

The bear case is equally clear. At 58 times expected earnings, Marvell’s valuation leaves little room for disappointment. Short interest of 28.39 million shares — equivalent to 3.26 percent of the float — indicates a meaningful segment of the market is betting against the stock. Industry-wide component shortages, particularly capacitors, could also pressure supply chains and margins if the scarcity intensifies.

A Stock That Has Already Delivered — and Still Has Ground to Recover

The performance metrics are striking by any standard. Marvell shares have gained 164 percent since the start of the year and 250 percent over the past twelve months — returns that place it in rarefied territory even for the semiconductor sector. Yet the 34 percent gap to the 52-week high shows how much euphoria was stripped out during the summer pullback.

The stock trades 45 percent above its 200-day moving average, underscoring the persistence of its medium-term uptrend. But that same distance from the trendline also highlights how extended the move has become.

What October 6 Will Determine

All roads now lead to Marvell’s Investor Day on October 6. That’s when management is expected to provide greater detail on the long-term revenue trajectory and, crucially, on the Google partnership’s monetization timeline. The question hanging over the event: whether the Google collaboration can stand on its own as a distinct growth story, or whether Marvell will continue to ride primarily in the slipstream of larger partners.

The broader industry tailwind is substantial — Nvidia projects capital expenditures of $1.3 trillion across the five largest hyperscalers for 2027, and Marvell, as a supplier of custom chips, stands to benefit disproportionately if that forecast holds.

For now, the stock occupies an unusual position: delivering exceptional growth, backed by a major strategic partnership, yet still needing external headlines to move the needle. Friday’s Nvidia-driven rally was the latest reminder of that dynamic. The October Investor Day will show whether Marvell can finally generate its own momentum — or whether it remains, for now, a stock that rises on the strength of others’ ambitions.
