Xiaomi’s Two-Front Battle: Tariff Uncertainty in Europe Meets a Homegrown Chip Offensive

The arithmetic facing Xiaomi as it prepares to enter the European electric vehicle market is not for the faint-hearted. Should Brussels impose duties at the upper end of the range currently under discussion, a €50,000 vehicle would carry an additional burden of roughly $8,000 — on top of the standard 10 percent import tariff. With the final rate still floating somewhere between 20.7 and 35.3 percent, the company is trying to plot a European launch against a moving target.

That regulatory fog is only one layer of the challenge. The company’s EV and AI segment posted a loss of 2.6 billion yuan — approximately $360 million — in the second quarter of 2026, underscoring the cost of building an overseas business before the revenue arrives. Xiaomi has signed non-binding letters of intent with eight German dealer groups, including Ernst Dello, Emil Frey Germany and Hahn Automobile, yet concrete details on investment levels or production sites remain conspicuously absent. A European Union type approval — a non-negotiable prerequisite for market entry — has not been secured, and the company has not named an official EU representative.

Home Market Momentum Tells a Different Story

The contrast with Xiaomi’s domestic performance could hardly be starker. Since launching its automotive line in 2024, the company has delivered more than 700,000 vehicles in China alone, with the SU7 sedan accounting for over 500,000 of those deliveries across 28.5 months. The SU7 Ultra has set a lap record at the Nürburgring, and the newer YU7 model pulled in 240,000 orders within 18 hours of opening its order books — evidence, investors hope, that the formula can travel.

That domestic strength is backed by serious spending on technology. Research and development outlays climbed 33.4 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026 to 9 billion yuan, with full-year spending projected to exceed 40 billion yuan. Over a three-year horizon, the company plans to channel 60 billion yuan into artificial intelligence — an investment that should sharpen the software-defined differentiation of its vehicles.

A September Product Blitz With a Homegrown Twist

While the European question simmers, Xiaomi is compressing an unusual amount of product news into a single month. Following its presence at IFA in Berlin, which runs until September 8, the company has scheduled a launch event in China for September 7 to unveil the Xiaomi 18 Fold and the Xiaomi Pad 9 Pro Max. Both devices will be the first to carry the Xring O3, the company’s new in-house processor.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Xiaomi?

The Xring O3 is part of a broader semiconductor family that includes the O100 and D100 models. Chief executive Lei Jun flagged September as a “Big Tech Month” in late August, teasing not only the foldable lineup but also new EV models and additional Xuanjie and Xring chips. The strategy appears designed to maximize media attention while signaling a gradual retreat from dependence on external chip suppliers.

On the memory front, Xiaomi has already moved to secure domestic supply: Reuters reported in late August that CXMT will provide the storage chips for the upcoming foldable, a decision the company confirmed via its official Weibo channel. Pairing an in-house processor with a Chinese memory partner fits a broader pattern of anchoring supply chains closer to home.

September holds more in store. Later in the month, the Xiaomi 18 Pro series is expected to launch in China, with unconfirmed reports suggesting Qualcomm’s forthcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chip could power those models. Xiaomi has not officially confirmed that detail, but if true, the company would be deploying both its own silicon and Qualcomm’s latest generation across different product tiers within weeks of each other.

The Market’s Measured Response

For all the announcement density, the share price has remained relatively subdued. The stock closed Friday at €3.11, up 2.4 percent on the day in one account and 2.1 percent in another — a marginal discrepancy that does little to alter the broader picture. The shares sit comfortably below their 200-day moving average of €3.52, and while the recovery from the 52-week low of €2.34 amounts to a 33 percent bounce, the distance to the 52-week high of €6.54 — reached last September — is a daunting 52 percent. Year-to-date, the stock is down 28 percent.

Annualized volatility of 53 percent suggests investors are braced for swings in either direction. The market has rewarded Xiaomi’s Chinese successes, but the valuation test truly begins when European sales commence. Between now and then, the September launch events — the foldable debut on the 7th and the Pro series later in the month — offer the first concrete evidence of whether this dense product cadence can convert attention into sales, and whether the chip strategy resonates with consumers as much as it does with supply-chain strategists.
