Hot Jobs Data Kills the Rate-Cut Trade, AI’s Build-Out Rolls On

Dear readers,

Yesterday’s forecast was for a soft print, and the market had already positioned for it. Instead, the Bureau of Labor Statistics delivered the opposite of what economists modeled: 162,000 new jobs in August against a consensus of just 56,000, with unemployment holding steady at 4.1%. The rate-cut trade that dominated this week’s positioning didn’t just wobble — it collapsed within hours.

A Jobs Report That Rewrites the Fed Playbook

The bond market reacted immediately. Ten-year Treasury yields jumped to their highest level since early 2025, and futures markets did something few expected even a day earlier: they flipped from debating the size of a September rate cut to pricing roughly a 60% probability of a hike at the Fed’s September 15-16 meeting. That’s a dramatic reversal from the coin-flip odds the market was assigning to a hike just one day before. The S&P 500, which closed out the week at just over 7,718, now faces a genuine test — one where cheap money can no longer do the heavy lifting. Multiple expansion driven by rate-cut hopes is off the table for now; earnings growth will have to carry the index from here, and not every sector is built for that kind of scrutiny.

Nvidia and Broadcom Show Where the Capital Is Actually Going

While rate traders were repricing the curve, the AI infrastructure trade kept compounding on its own timeline. Nvidia’s $12.93 billion acquisition of Hugging Face — the open-source hub that most AI developers treat as their default starting point — closed out the week with Nvidia shares at €198.56 in German trading. The deal is less about hardware than about control: Nvidia is buying the software layer that decides which chips get used to train and run the next generation of models, extending its moat well past silicon.

Broadcom’s latest quarterly numbers make the same point from a different angle. AI-related revenue jumped 221% year-over-year to $16.7 billion in the quarter just reported. Put those two data points together and a pattern emerges: the bottleneck in AI is migrating away from raw compute and toward networking and software integration. Investors chasing the next leg of the AI trade need exposure to the companies building the connective tissue, not just the chips themselves.

Wall Street’s Plumbing Goes On-Chain

Away from the rate debate, traditional finance is moving faster than most investors have priced in. Oliver Wyman now estimates that $45 billion in financial-market revenue could migrate to tokenized systems in the years ahead. That’s no longer a theoretical model — the practice is already showing up in regulatory filings. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency granted a preliminary charter to OpenReserve Bank, an institution designed from the ground up to combine conventional banking with crypto custody and a stablecoin subsidiary. Singapore, meanwhile, is drawing its own regulatory lines, requiring 100% reserve backing under a strict new stablecoin framework. Together, these moves signal something more durable than a trading narrative: crypto rails are becoming the plumbing for mainstream securities markets, not a side bet parked next to them.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nvidia?

Washington’s Crypto Bill Clears a Key Hurdle

The regulatory tailwind extends to Capitol Hill. The Senate is scheduled to vote on the Clarity Act on September 15, legislation meant to give digital assets a coherent legal framework for the first time. The bill’s odds improved materially after the National Sheriffs’ Association dropped its opposition, removing one of the more visible law-enforcement objections and raising the chances of passage before the midterms. Bitcoin, trading just under $80,000 over the weekend, appears to have already priced in some of that optimism. Legal clarity has long been the missing piece keeping large pools of institutional capital on the sidelines — if the Senate delivers, that barrier gets meaningfully smaller.

Oil Adds a New Margin Risk to the Mix

Geopolitics is complicating the picture. A U.S. strike on an Iranian oil tanker near Kharg Island pushed Brent crude toward $96 a barrel. Analysts warn the resulting cost pressure won’t fully hit corporate margins until the second quarter of the next fiscal year — but when it does, it will land at an awkward moment, just as companies are funding record capital expenditures on AI infrastructure. Businesses without genuine pricing power are the ones most exposed to that squeeze, and the gap between winners and losers on this front is likely to widen in the months ahead.

The Takeaway

The jobs number did what data rarely does: it flipped the market’s central assumption in a single session, from rate cuts to rate hikes, and forced a real repricing of risk. Layer in rising oil costs and the margin pressure they imply, and the easy-money tailwind that’s carried equities for months is fading fast. What isn’t fading is the capital flowing into AI’s networking and software layer, or the steady march of tokenization into mainstream finance. Investors navigating the next stretch should look past the index-level noise and stay anchored to the infrastructure stories — AI and crypto plumbing alike — that don’t depend on the Fed’s next move to keep growing.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Best regards,
