Nel ASA’s Autumn Pivot: A Vacant Corner Office and a Pivotal October Report

The Norwegian electrolyser manufacturer has entered a period of suspended animation. With no fresh corporate news since the second-quarter figures landed in July and the departure announcement of CEO Håkon Volldal back in June, investors are marking time until October 21 — the date when Nel ASA delivers its third-quarter scorecard.

Friday’s close of EUR 0.1960, up 1.8 percent on the day, masks a more sobering reality. The shares have drifted 0.9 percent lower over the past month and sit just beneath their 50-day moving average of EUR 0.1996. More striking is the distance from the 52-week high of EUR 0.3655 — a 46 percent gap that underscores how far the stock has retreated from its earlier highs. Since the commercial rollout of its electrolyser technology began just over a month ago, the equity has shed roughly 28.7 percent of its value.

The Numbers That Haunt the Narrative

The company’s recent financial disclosures offer little comfort. Second-quarter 2026 revenue came in at NOK 153 million, a 12 percent decline year-on-year. The EBITDA picture is starker still: a loss of NOK 155 million, deepening from the NOK 100 million deficit recorded in the first quarter and the NOK 86 million loss posted in the same period a year earlier.

That trajectory — three consecutive quarters of deterioration — points to something more structural than a temporary blip. Questions around cost discipline and capacity utilisation at the manufacturing facilities will demand answers from whoever eventually takes the helm.

A Leadership Vacuum Adds to the Uncertainty

The search for Volldal’s successor remains unresolved. His resignation, announced in June with a six-month notice period, leaves the company in a state of limbo. The board’s hunt for a replacement has yet to yield a public result, layering an additional element of unpredictability onto an already cautious market stance.

Whoever steps into the role inherits a dual challenge: stabilising profitability while charting a credible growth course in a sector that has tested investor patience.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nel ASA?

The Order Book Becomes the Crucial Test

For market participants, the October report distills down to a single question: can Nel demonstrate that its pipeline and order intake are translating into actual revenue? The commercial launch of its electrolyser technology has generated headlines, but hard monetisation data has been conspicuously absent.

The technical setup reflects this wait-and-see posture. The stock’s 30-day volatility stands at 22 percent, a level that could accommodate sharp moves in either direction should the report surprise. A convincing update on orders and project momentum could break the consolidation phase and open a path toward the 100-day moving average of EUR 0.2332. Conversely, another quarter of progress reports without substantiating figures would likely cement the stock’s position below its 200-day average of EUR 0.2132 — currently 8.1 percent beneath that level — and potentially invite a retest of the 52-week low at EUR 0.1731.

The RSI reading of 47.9 suggests the stock is neither oversold nor overbought, offering no technical trigger for an automatic rebound.

What October Holds

The fourth-quarter report follows on February 18, 2027, but the immediate focus rests squarely on the October 21 release. Until then, the shares are likely to remain hostage to sentiment rather than fundamentals, oscillating near the 50-day line as investors weigh the possibility of delayed projects or weak order entries against the prospect of a genuine inflection point.

Should Nel deliver tangible evidence that the commercial phase is gaining traction, the October report could provide the catalyst that finally breaks the stock free from its multi-week sideways drift. If not, the narrative of a company still waiting for its technology to translate into earnings will only harden. Either way, the date is set — and the waiting game has a defined endpoint.
