BASF’s Multi-Pronged Push: Buybacks, Price Hikes, and a Texas Courtroom

The chemical giant’s shares closed Friday at €53.33, hovering just 3.1 percent beneath a 52-week high of €55.05 reached back in April. That resilience is no accident — it reflects a company deploying every lever at its disposal, from capital returns to courtroom strategy.

Chief among those levers is the share repurchase program launched just over a week ago, which has already helped lift the stock by 1.8 percent since its announcement. The buyback, part of a broader capital return framework targeting at least €4 billion by the end of 2028, saw BASF acquire 591,251 of its own shares between August 24 and 28. The €1 billion program is one of several measures cushioning demand for the equity.

A Plant Reborn and Price Power Restored

On the operational front, BASF has officially brought a fully modernized facility for acid chlorides and chloroformates back online at its Ludwigshafen Verbund site. The company confirmed the restart in two consecutive announcements in early September — first regionally, then group-wide — signaling the importance of the upgraded capacity.

Pricing power is also being reasserted. Effective September 1, BASF implemented price increases for caprolactam, polyamide 6, and polyamide-6/66 copolymers in North America, alongside hikes for neopentyl glycol in both Europe and North America. The adjustments, telegraphed in late August, target key upstream materials for the plastics and fiber industries — a clear attempt to defend margins in a competitive environment.

Legal Maneuvering in Texas

The company has also taken its intellectual property battle beyond the traditional chemical arena. BASF filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Apple in a U.S. federal court in Midland, Texas, alleging violations related to Face ID and facial authentication technology. The outcome remains uncertain, but the move underscores a willingness to defend proprietary technology aggressively.

The Rhine Problem Persists

Yet not everything is running smoothly. Low water levels on the Rhine — a critical logistics artery for the Ludwigshafen site — have hampered the delivery of certain products, according to management. The river serves as the primary transport corridor for both raw materials and finished goods, making seasonal low-water periods a recurring operational headache. Financial guidance on the impact remains unavailable, and investors will likely hear more on the subject during the Q3 earnings call scheduled for October 28.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BASF?

Recognition and Recalibration

Amid the operational noise, BASF’s Plantapon Amino ASP received the Ringier Technology Innovation Award 2026 in the Functional Chemicals – Surfactants category. While such accolades rarely move share prices directly, they reinforce the narrative of a company maintaining its R&D commitment through restructuring.

The agricultural division is also investing for the long term, with plans to construct a new Climate Center at the German headquarters to expand crop science research capabilities.

Analyst Caution Creeps In

Not everyone is convinced the rally has further to run. Mid-week, mwb research downgraded its rating from “Buy” to “Hold,” though it kept its price target at €55 — suggesting much of the near-term upside is now priced in without signaling fundamental deterioration.

The broader picture remains constructive: shares are up 5.3 percent over 30 days and have gained 20 percent year-to-date. The portfolio reshaping continues apace, with the sale of large parts of the coatings business to Carlyle completed in late June — since which the stock has improved 14.1 percent.

For the second quarter ended June 30, BASF reported revenue of €17.21 billion and earnings per share of €4.78, figures released on July 15. The next major test arrives with the Q3 report on October 28, which will reveal whether the Rhine logistics issues have dented the numbers or whether the operational strength of Q2 can be sustained.
