Nvidia’s Two-Pronged Offensive: A $3.5 Billion Stake in MediaTek and a Cloud Alliance That Reshapes the AI Map

The arithmetic of artificial intelligence is no longer just about who builds the fastest chip. It is increasingly about who controls the rails on which those chips run. Nvidia’s latest moves—a $3.5 billion convertible bond investment in Taiwan’s MediaTek and an expanded cloud partnership with Amazon Web Services—suggest the company is intent on owning both the silicon and the system around it.

The MediaTek deal, reported by Bloomberg, marks the largest direct investment Nvidia has ever made outside the United States. The two companies, already long-time collaborators, will jointly develop next-generation AI computing platforms spanning infrastructure, on-device AI, and automotive applications. At the heart of the arrangement is MediaTek’s adoption of Nvidia’s NVLink-Fusion platform, which gives hyperscalers, cloud providers, and foundation-model developers a pre-validated route to building custom XPUs that plug directly into NVLink-connected, rack-scale AI factories.

The strategic logic is straightforward: Nvidia wants its interconnect technology to be the default language of AI computing, regardless of who actually fabricates the processing units. Even where rivals develop their own chips, Nvidia’s networking layer would remain the connective tissue—a position that cements the company as the AI industry’s central infrastructure player rather than merely its most prominent supplier.

The AWS Expansion: Two Million GPUs and a Government Play

The MediaTek announcement arrived alongside a significant deepening of Nvidia’s relationship with Amazon Web Services. Plans unveiled on August 26 call for two million additional Nvidia GPUs to be integrated into AWS’s global infrastructure during 2027 and 2028. AWS will also gain access to Nvidia’s new Vera CPUs, offering an additional compute option for agent-based AI applications.

The partnership extends into the public sector as well. The two companies intend to build AI factories for the U.S. government, including a facility housing 100,000 GPUs on secure AWS infrastructure. The production pipeline is already moving: on August 25, Nvidia confirmed that its Vera-Rubin platform has entered full production, with initial racks shipping to partners including CoreWeave, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and Nebius.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nvidia?

The Hugging Face Deal: A $12.93 Billion Ecosystem Play

These hardware-centric announcements follow closely on the heels of Nvidia’s agreement to acquire Hugging Face, the open AI platform, for $12.93 billion. The platform hosts more than three million models and 500,000 datasets, used by hundreds of thousands of companies worldwide. CEO Jensen Huang has emphasized that Hugging Face will remain open, with free choice of models, frameworks, and cloud providers.

It is Nvidia’s second-largest acquisition ever, trailing only the $20 billion purchase of Groq assets last December. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2027, pending regulatory approval. Analysts have framed the deal less as a near-term financial calculation and more as a long-term ecosystem strategy. CFRA’s Angelo Zino described it as a building block on the path to physical AI, while investor Barbara Doran called it a shrewd strategic move toward becoming a platform provider rather than a pure chip supplier.

Market Response: Near-Record Territory

Investors have responded favorably to the flurry of announcements. Nvidia shares closed Friday at €198.56, up 1.1 percent on the day and 5.7 percent over the past seven trading sessions. The stock now sits just 1.9 percent below its 52-week high of €202.50, reached on May 14. Year-to-date, the shares have gained 24 percent, with a 35 percent advance over the past twelve months. At least one analyst has reaffirmed a buy rating with a price target of $300 following the Hugging Face announcement.

The company’s market capitalization now stands at roughly €4.666 trillion, a figure that underscores just how much expectation is priced into the stock. The combination of quarterly results from last Thursday, the billion-dollar Hugging Face acquisition, and the newly revealed MediaTek and AWS partnerships paints a picture of a company expanding its footprint on multiple fronts simultaneously—from chip manufacturing to networking architecture to cloud infrastructure.

For investors, the central question remains whether these multibillion-dollar commitments can sustain the growth expectations embedded in the valuation. The company is effectively placing bets across every layer of the AI stack, and the market is betting along with it.
