SpaceX Faces a Supply Test: 370 Million Shares Poised to Hit the Market as Dragon Mission Slips

SpaceX investors are bracing for a potential supply shock just as the company navigates an operational pause in its crewed spaceflight program. Nearly 370 million shares are set to be released from lock-up agreements on September 9 and 10, a move that could expand the freely tradable float by roughly 20 percent and inject significant new supply into a stock that has been on a tear.

The timing is delicate. The share release lands while NASA and SpaceX remain silent on a new launch date for the Crew-13 mission to the International Space Station, originally slated for September 12. Technicians uncovered an oxidizer leak in the propulsion system of the Dragon capsule during prelaunch preparations, triggering a safety review that has yet to yield a revised timeline.

A Stock Running Hot

The equity closed Friday at EUR 127.36, down 1.1 percent on the day, yet the pullback barely dents a broader rally that has lifted the shares 4.2 percent over the past week and an eye-popping 36 percent across the last 30 days. The stock now trades roughly 7.7 percent above its 50-day moving average, though it remains 35 percent below the 52-week high of EUR 194.46 touched on June 16.

That gap underscores just how far the shares have run — and how much room remains before they reclaim prior peaks. With annualized 30-day volatility sitting at 86 percent, the equity has demonstrated a hair-trigger sensitivity to headlines, a trait that makes the impending share unlock all the more consequential for near-term price action.

Starlink’s Assembly Line Keeps Humming

While the crewed mission idles, the uncrewed side of the business shows no signs of slowing. A Falcon 9 lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California in early September, marking the company’s 104th orbital launch of the year and its 79th Starlink mission in 2026 alone. Days earlier, another Falcon 9 — flying a first stage on its 35th mission — delivered 27 additional Starlink satellites to orbit.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SpaceX?

SpaceX has shifted all Starlink missions to West Coast pads to reserve Florida launch infrastructure for the upcoming debut of the Starship-Super Heavy combination. The 14th test flight of the two-stage system, which would also mark the third flight of the Version 3 iteration, is anticipated in early September. Regulatory groundwork is advancing in parallel: the FAA has issued a final tiered environmental review with a finding of no significant impact for Starship reentry operations over the Pacific, along with an additional landing trajectory. SpaceX has separately filed with the FCC for reserve ship communications for the flight, requesting an operational window from September 15 through March 15, 2027, for an orbital second stage launching from Starbase in Texas.

The company is also wielding regulatory tools defensively, having petitioned the FCC to block or tightly condition the planned satellite fleet of rival Viasat — a reminder that SpaceX treats the rulemaking process as a competitive arena in its own right.

Fundamentals Provide the Floor

The recent share appreciation traces back to second-quarter results published in early August, which delivered a decisive beat. Revenue reached $7.81 billion, well ahead of the $6.93 billion consensus and up 92 percent from the $4.1 billion posted a year earlier. The net loss narrowed to $541 million from roughly $1 billion, while capital expenditures surged to $18.4 billion — far exceeding the approximately $13 billion analysts had modeled.

CFO Bret Johnsen said during the earnings call that the company remains on track to hit an annualized recurring revenue run rate of $100 billion by year-end. He also noted that SpaceX has already contracted an additional $6.7 billion in cloud service revenue over a six-month period beginning in October.

JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth reaffirmed his Overweight rating and $240 price target in late August, a stance informed by the strong quarterly figures. The central question for holders now is whether that fundamental momentum can absorb the dilution effects of the upcoming share release, even as the Dragon delay keeps near-term headlines under a cloud.
