Nvidia’s Capital Returns Signal a Shift: The Chip Giant Now Finances Its Own Growth Story

For all the noise surrounding Nvidia’s blockbuster acquisition of Hugging Face, the most telling detail of the company’s recent activity may be tucked inside its dividend calendar. On October 1, Nvidia will pay its next quarterly dividend of $0.25 per share, with a September 10 record date. It’s a footnote in the broader coverage — and precisely why it deserves closer inspection.

The Numbers Behind the Narrative

Nvidia’s second fiscal quarter of 2027 delivered revenue of $96.2 billion, up 106 percent year over year, with gross margins holding at a robust 75.0 percent on both a GAAP and adjusted basis. The company returned $26.0 billion to shareholders during the quarter — $20 billion via buybacks and $6 billion in dividends.

That capital allocation strategy marks a maturation point. Nvidia isn’t just growing; it’s funding that expansion from internal cash flow while still rewarding shareholders. The market has responded accordingly, with the stock closing at €198.56, just 1.9 percent below its 52-week high of €202.50. The shares have climbed well clear of their 50-day average of €183.03, yet the relative strength index of 60.4 suggests momentum remains measured rather than overheated.

Guidance That Priced In Caution

Looking ahead, Nvidia projects third-quarter revenue of $108.0 billion, plus or minus 2 percent. Notably, that forecast explicitly excludes all data-center compute sales from China. The company is signaling that its growth engine no longer depends on a geopolitically fraught market — a statement of resilience rather than retreat.

The Vera Rubin platform is expected to contribute roughly 20 percent of data-center revenue in the current quarter, and management’s preliminary outlook for fiscal 2028 calls for approximately 70 percent revenue growth year over year. For a company that has already tripled its quarterly revenue from the prior-year period, such projections carry weight.

The Ecosystem Play

The $12.93 billion Hugging Face acquisition — Nvidia’s second-largest in corporate history, trailing only the $20 billion Groq-assets deal from December 2025 — fits a broader pattern. Nvidia is systematically embedding itself across every layer of the AI stack, from silicon to developer platforms with more than 18 million users and 200,000 enterprise customers.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nvidia?

The strategy extends beyond direct ownership. Reports of a $35 billion compute arrangement between Nvidia-backed Lambda and Anthropic, reportedly leveraging infrastructure from Hut 8 and Nvidia GPUs, illustrate the point: Nvidia no longer needs to be the named party to benefit from industry-wide deals. Its capital has become so intertwined with AI’s infrastructure that virtually any major contract generates GPU demand downstream.

Reuters’ Breakingviews commentary earlier this month captured this dynamic, describing how financiers increasingly cast Nvidia in the role of an “AI Baron.” The label may be unofficial, but it reflects a company that has evolved from chip vendor into the financial architect of the very ecosystem that drives its sales.

Political Visibility Cuts Both Ways

President Donald Trump’s phone call to CEO Jensen Huang during an internal all-hands meeting, just before Trump publicly commented on Nvidia’s results, underscores the company’s elevated political standing. That proximity to power could yield advantages on export policy — but it also makes Nvidia a more conspicuous target should Washington’s priorities shift.

The zero-China assumption baked into guidance already accounts for considerable geopolitical friction. Any resumption of sales there would represent pure upside, but the current posture suggests investors have priced in a prolonged absence from that market.

A Stock Between Strength and Exposure

The shares closed Friday up 1.1 percent at €198.56, sitting 42 percent above their September 2025 low. With 30-day volatility at 42 percent, Nvidia remains a high-octane holding — hardly a quiet investment.

What has changed is the character of the bull case. The combination of record margins, shareholder-friendly capital returns, and guidance that pre-emptively excludes China risk suggests the current valuation near all-time highs rests on measurable fundamentals rather than speculative fervor. The company’s next financial update arrives November 25, offering investors another checkpoint on whether the ecosystem strategy continues to translate into earnings power.
