SAP’s Data-Infrastructure Push Puts Share Price Recovery in Sharper Focus

The gap between SAP’s operational momentum and its market valuation has rarely been wider. The Walldorf-based software group is executing on an aggressive artificial-intelligence roadmap, closing acquisitions, signing marquee customers and hosting a dense calendar of product events — yet its shares still trade roughly a quarter below the 52-week high of €242.00 reached in October.

That disconnect was on display again on Friday, when the stock closed at €185.10. The price sits just over 15 percent above its 50-day moving average of €161.58, pointing to a brightening short-term trend, but remains down 12 percent since the start of the year. Over the past seven days the shares shed 3.0 percent, though a 30-day view shows an 8.9 percent recovery.

A Two-Pronged AI Strategy Takes Shape

The company’s latest move came on July 17, when SAP completed the acquisition of Prior Labs, a pioneer in tabular foundation models. Management has pledged to invest more than €1 billion over the next four years to transform the startup into a leading frontier-AI laboratory focused on structured data.

The deal followed the early-July closing of the Dremio acquisition, which takes a different technical route to a similar destination. Dremio’s data-lakehouse platform is designed to merge data from SAP and non-SAP environments in real time for analytics and AI applications. Together, the two purchases underpin the infrastructure on which agentic AI tools such as Joule will run.

Regulators have offered little resistance. The Bundeskartellamt declined to open proceedings against the company in late July, removing a potential source of uncertainty over its market position.

Reference Customers and a Full Event Calendar

SAP has been busy demonstrating that its AI ambitions translate into client wins. On August 19, NTT DATA signed on as a reference customer, integrating SuccessFactors and Joule into its global HR transformation. That announcement followed the completion of a nine-month project for Irish dairy processor Tirlán, for which SAP built an independent landscape — a technical separation from former partner Glanbia completed, according to the company, without operational disruption.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?

The September calendar is packed with engagements designed to keep the AI narrative front and center. Chief executive Christian Klein is scheduled to appear at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia & Technology Conference on September 8 for a fireside chat with institutional investors. A series of webinars around the Business Data Cloud follows, including “Architecting Your Data Foundation for the Autonomous Enterprise” on September 16, a SAP BAIP onboarding session the next day, and “Building Real-Time, Unified Data Products for Agentic AI” on September 23. Software partner OpenText will co-host an event on a “Connected Content Strategy for RISE with SAP” later in the month, citing an IDC study projecting a 288 percent return on investment over three years.

Solid Numbers, Divergent Analyst Views

The operational case rests on second-quarter figures released July 23. Current cloud backlog expanded 27 percent to €22.9 billion, or 26 percent in currency-adjusted terms. Cloud ERP suite revenue rose 27 percent on a constant-currency basis, while total revenue climbed 9 percent, or 11 percent currency-adjusted.

For the full year, SAP guides to cloud revenue of €25.8 billion to €26.2 billion at constant currencies, representing growth of 23 to 25 percent over the €21.02 billion posted in the prior year. Non-IFRS operating profit is expected to reach €11.8 billion to €12.2 billion, up from €10.42 billion.

Not every analyst is equally enthusiastic. UBS downgraded SAP from Buy to Neutral on August 26, even as it lifted its price target to €211 — a move that acknowledges operational progress while signaling that valuation looks increasingly stretched after the share price run-up. The downgrade triggered a notable sell-off at the time, though that reaction now lies more than a week in the past.

A Stock Caught Between Fundamentals and Perception

The shares recovered substantially from the July low of €127.52, yet the year-on-year picture remains sobering: Friday’s close sits more than a fifth below the level of twelve months ago. For investors, the central question is whether the flurry of product announcements, partnerships and executive appearances will translate into measurable demand for the Business AI Platform — and whether Klein’s Goldman Sachs appearance can shift sentiment among institutional holders who have watched the stock give back much of its 2024 gains.
