Micron Technology Shares Surge on Stellar Earnings and AI-Driven Demand

Micron Technology Inc. delivered quarterly results on December 17, 2025, that shattered even the most bullish market forecasts, triggering a dramatic share price increase of more than 10%. The memory chip manufacturer is reaping substantial benefits from the artificial intelligence boom, with current demand vastly outstripping available supply.

Unprecedented Guidance and Soaring Margins

The company’s outlook proved even more remarkable than its historical performance. For the current quarter, Micron provided revenue guidance of $18.7 billion, nearly double the analyst consensus estimate of $14.2 billion. The forecast for earnings per share stands at $8.42, far surpassing the market’s expectation of $4.78.

This performance is expected to drive the gross margin to 68%, fueled by favorable pricing dynamics and an improved product mix. Sanjay Mehrotra, Micron’s Chief Executive Officer, emphasized that memory market conditions are likely to remain tight beyond 2026. He noted that the company can currently fulfill only 50% to two-thirds of the demand from several of its largest customers.

Record Quarterly Performance

For the first quarter of its 2026 fiscal year, Micron reported revenue of $13.64 billion, representing a 57% increase compared to the prior year. This figure exceeded analyst projections of $12.85 billion. Earnings per share came in at $4.78, significantly above the estimated $3.95.

HBM Capacity Fully Booked Through 2026

A critical driver of this performance is High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM), chips essential for advanced AI applications. Micron has already sold out its entire HBM production capacity for 2026, including its latest HBM4 generation. Consequently, the company has revised its market outlook, now anticipating the HBM market will grow at a 40% annual rate to approximately $100 billion by 2028—a projection brought forward by two years.

As one of only three major global suppliers of HBM chips, alongside SK Hynix and Samsung, Micron enjoys significant pricing power due to this concentrated market structure.

Wall Street Responds with Aggressive Target Hikes

The financial community reacted swiftly to the report, with several firms drastically raising their price targets:

  • Bank of America Securities upgraded the stock to “Buy” and lifted its target from $250 to $300.
  • Rosenblatt increased its target price from $300 to $500.
  • Mizuho adjusted its target upward from $270 to $290.
  • Needham reaffirmed its “Buy” rating with a $300 target.

Bank of America analyst Vivek Arya highlighted that the complete sell-out of HBM inventory for 2026 clearly signals persistently constrained supply.

Strategic Shifts and Capital Investment

To address the overwhelming demand, Micron is raising its capital expenditure for fiscal 2026 to $20 billion. In a strategic pivot, the company also plans to wind down its consumer-focused “Crucial” business unit and redirect those resources toward its higher-margin AI-related operations.

Micron shares are currently trading at €233.60 and have gained 174.5% since the start of the year. The average analyst price target now sits around $287. All eyes are on the next quarterly report, expected in March 2026, where the benchmark for success has been raised substantially.
