Salesforce Faces Dual Crisis: Data Extortion Threat and User Backlash Over AI Tools

Salesforce finds itself navigating turbulent waters as two significant challenges emerge simultaneously. The customer relationship management leader is confronting a severe cybersecurity threat while also managing substantial user dissatisfaction with its recently implemented artificial intelligence systems.

Cybersecurity Extortion Attempt

A hacking collective identifying itself as “Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters” issued a concerning ultimatum to Salesforce last Friday. The cybercriminals claim to possess over one billion customer records and have threatened to release this information publicly unless their ransom demands are met by October 10. To support their claims, the group has established a dedicated website listing dozens of major corporations whose data they allegedly obtained through Salesforce platforms.

The company has responded to these allegations with firm denial. According to Salesforce officials, their core platform infrastructure remains secure and uncompromised. Instead, they attribute the potential breach to social engineering tactics where attackers manipulated employees at client companies through deceptive phone communications, thereby gaining unauthorized system access.

Artificial Intelligence Implementation Sparks User Frustration

Complicating matters further, Salesforce faces growing internal resistance to its aggressive artificial intelligence integration strategy. Since October 1, the corporation has mandated that all users of its help resources exclusively utilize the “Agentforce” AI assistant, having completely disabled traditional search functionality.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Salesforce?

This policy shift has generated substantial criticism from both developers and everyday users. Complaints center around the AI tool’s performance deficiencies, including slower response times, frequent misinterpretation of queries, and generally inferior results compared to the conventional search system it replaced. The widespread dissatisfaction presents a significant concern for Salesforce’s broader AI ambitions, which envision incorporating artificial intelligence throughout its entire product ecosystem.

Critical Timeline Ahead

The coming days will prove decisive for Salesforce as it addresses these parallel challenges. Should the hackers follow through with their threat to publish sensitive customer information on October 10, the company could face severe reputation damage and potential legal liabilities from affected parties.

Adding to the pressure, Salesforce’s annual Investor Day scheduled for October 15 will require management to present convincing solutions to both issues. Executives must outline comprehensive plans for securing their ecosystem against future breaches while simultaneously reassuring stakeholders about their AI roadmap’s viability despite current user dissatisfaction.
