5% Money Forces AI’s Believers to Show Their Math

Dear readers,

The Federal Reserve delivers its rate decision this afternoon, and for once the suspense isn’t really about the decision itself — markets already assign it more than 90% odds — but about what comes after. With the 10-year Treasury yield holding near the 5% mark it broke through yesterday, cheap capital is no longer a given, and every growth story in the market is being asked the same blunt question: can you actually afford yourself?

The Fed’s Predictable Move, the Market’s Unpredictable Reaction

At 2 p.m. Eastern, the Fed is expected to raise rates by 25 basis points, to a range of 3.75% to 4.00%. July’s PCE inflation reading of 3.7% has left the central bank little room to maneuver, even as rising Treasury yields are already doing some of the tightening work for it by pushing up borrowing costs across the economy. For equity investors, the mechanism is simple and unforgiving: when risk-free government debt pays 5%, the premium investors demand from richly valued growth stocks shrinks. Promises of future profit no longer clear the bar. Companies now have to earn their cost of capital in the present tense.

Nvidia’s Math Problem — and a $3.6 Billion Fix

Nobody has put a number on AI’s capital appetite quite like Jensen Huang. The Nvidia CEO says a single one-gigawatt AI factory now costs $50 billion to $60 billion to build. He argues that same facility can generate $50 billion in annual revenue — a genuinely striking payback ratio — but at 5% financing costs, the arithmetic on megaprojects like this gets a lot less forgiving. Nvidia shares are holding up regardless, trading around $185, but investor attention is visibly drifting downstream from the chips toward the infrastructure wrapped around them. Anything that trims capital intensity is suddenly valuable: new 800-volt DC architectures for data centers can cut the buildout cost of a one-gigawatt project by 27%, or roughly $3.6 billion, simply by eliminating expensive transformers and conversion losses. In a 5% world, energy efficiency and capital efficiency are becoming the same trade.

Chipmakers Pay the Price of Onshoring

The semiconductor supply chain is absorbing its own version of this squeeze, layered with geopolitics. Micron Technology is contending with strike risk in Taiwan that could sideline as much as 80% of its local workforce, while Intel is reportedly negotiating a joint venture with South Korea’s SK Hynix to help fund its Ohio plant — a project already pushed back to 2030. Intel shares jumped more than 4%, to just under $88, on the news. The underlying logic is straightforward: bringing chip production back to American soil is increasingly too expensive for any single company to shoulder alone at current rates. Shared risk, shared capital — partnerships aren’t a preference anymore, they’re a necessity.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nvidia?

Crypto’s Regulatory Setback, and the Institutions That Didn’t Wait

Crypto’s institutional ambitions hit a wall yesterday when the Senate blocked the CLARITY Act, the bill meant to settle jurisdiction between the SEC and CFTC, by a single vote, 49 to 50. Bitcoin slid roughly 3% to around $75,800 in the aftermath, and crypto-linked equities like Coinbase and Circle took double-digit percentage hits. But the setback in Washington obscures a more interesting story: the infrastructure build-out isn’t waiting for Congress. Circle went ahead and launched its Arc mainnet with BlackRock and Visa serving as validators, and Deutsche Bank is planning to roll out institutional crypto custody in Europe by the end of 2026. Traditional finance has effectively decided it doesn’t need political cover to keep building.

AI Earns Its Keep in the Lab, Not Just the Data Center

Away from the capital-intensity debate, AI’s practical value is showing up in pharma. Novo Nordisk announced a partnership with Anthropic, tapping the Claude model to speed up drug discovery. Meanwhile, the more traditional route to value creation is still doing the heavy lifting: BioNTech picked up fresh buy ratings after positive Phase 3 data for its oncology candidate, gotistobart. The pairing is instructive — AI as an efficiency layer, hard clinical results as the actual foundation. That combination, not AI alone, is what’s moving analyst models.

What It Means

A 5% yield doesn’t kill growth investing, but it does end the era where growth got a pass on scrutiny. The names that can fund their ambitions from their own cash flow — and find capital-efficient ways to build, like Nvidia’s power-architecture bet — are being separated from those leaning on external financing that just got structurally more expensive. Expect that divide to sharpen, not soften, as the Fed’s decision lands and the market spends the next few weeks re-pricing exactly whose growth is real and whose is borrowed.

Best regards,
