The upcoming anniversary of a pivotal event in April 2026 casts a spotlight on a challenging period for ams Osram. The Austrian sensor and lighting specialist faced a significant strategic blow when Apple unexpectedly terminated a collaborative micro-LED development project in early 2024. The financial repercussions of this decision continue to influence the company’s performance.

Operational and Geopolitical Headwinds Converge

ams Osram’s challenges extend beyond this single project cancellation. The company operates in an environment pressured by two broader structural trends. In its crucial automotive sector, European auto exports to China plummeted by more than 54% in 2025, falling to approximately €13.6 billion. This decline, driven by intense price competition from subsidized Chinese manufacturers, directly impacts European suppliers like ams Osram.

Concurrently, the global semiconductor industry faces mounting geopolitical tensions. Stricter U.S. export controls on advanced manufacturing equipment destined for China threaten the intricate international supply chains essential to ams Osram’s operations.

The Financial Toll of a Canceled Partnership

Apple’s withdrawal forced a complete strategic reassessment of ams Osram’s micro-LED ambitions. The company had invested substantial capital in a new 8-inch manufacturing facility in Kulim, Malaysia. Following the project’s termination, production at this site was halted.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ams Osram?

The total financial impact of this strategic shift amounted to roughly €576 million for the 2024 fiscal year. This sum comprised €490 million in asset impairments and a further €86 million in restructuring costs. Additionally, adjusted EBIT was negatively affected by €30 to €50 million due to modified rules for capitalizing research expenditures and the loss of certain grants.

This case underscores the substantial risks suppliers face when developing expensive, cutting-edge technology primarily for a single, dominant customer.

Market Sentiment and the Path Forward

Investor skepticism regarding the company’s ongoing repositioning is evident in its share price performance. The stock currently trades approximately 33% below its 52-week high of €13.84. This discount reflects market uncertainty about the firm’s future trajectory.

The coming quarterly results will be closely scrutinized for evidence that ams Osram is achieving a durable operational stabilization following the deep cut to its micro-LED business. The company’s ability to navigate this complex landscape of internal restructuring and external market pressures will define its recovery.
