TKMS Shares Firm Up Ahead of August’s Key Test

TKMS has been doing the kind of quiet, persistent work that usually gets noticed only after the fact: the stock has moved back above the key long-term trend markers, while the company now has a clearly dated checkpoint ahead. On Tuesday, the shares stood at EUR 88.40, up 4 percent on the day and 7.54 percent over the past week. On Monday, they had already jumped 4.04 percent to EUR 85.00.

That leaves the stock comfortably above its 200-day average, which stands at EUR 80.96 in the latest reading and EUR 80.91 in the earlier one. The rebound began a little more than a month ago, but the next real test comes on 12 August 2026, when TKMS publishes its quarterly report.

The chart picture is constructive, though not stretched to an extreme. The RSI(14) is at 62.2, elevated but still short of overbought territory. At the same time, annualized 30-day volatility of around 65 percent underlines how choppy trading remains. The stock is still below its 52-week high of EUR 106.58, with about 17 percent to go from Tuesday’s level. From Monday’s EUR 85.00, the gap was a little over 20 percent.

For investors, the central question is whether the recent strength reflects a genuine shift in fundamentals or simply a technical rebound after a weak spell. Over the past 30 days, TKMS had been down 9.48 percent before the latest bounce. That left the market with plenty of room for skepticism — and plenty of room for a counter-move once buying returned.

The company’s order story remains the strongest support for the share price. TKMS is widely regarded as the global leader in conventional submarines and has recently emerged as the preferred bidder for Canada’s submarine programme. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described the project as the largest defence procurement in the country’s history. Independent estimates put the value of the boats alone at between US$20 billion and US$30 billion.

There is, however, an important caveat: Canada’s choice is still only a preferred decision, not a signed contract. Carney also said Ottawa reserved the right to switch to rival Hanwha if negotiations with TKMS fail. That makes execution risk very real, especially because much of the growth narrative is already reflected in the valuation.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying TKMS?

Beyond Canada, TKMS is also working on far-reaching deals in India. Those discussions add to a pipeline that could keep yards busy for years. The challenge now is whether the company can scale production in Kiel and Wismar quickly enough without putting too much strain on the balance sheet through heavy upfront spending.

Strategy is another part of the story. Chief executive Oliver Burkhard is pushing a “Seabus” concept, aimed at building a European alliance in naval shipbuilding and reducing the fragmentation of national shipyards. A recently signed memorandum of understanding with Spain’s Navantia is intended as the foundation for that industrial partnership and a response to competition from Asia.

The share price move has also come as TKMS settles into life as an independent listed company. The former Thyssenkrupp division only achieved full independence on the stock market in October 2025, but it is already being treated as a pure-play defence name. With a market capitalisation of EUR 5.19 billion, it has become a fixed part of Germany’s equity landscape. Despite the recent pullback, the stock is still up 28.40 percent since the start of the year.

Bernstein Research remains cautious, arguing that the company’s own guidance is too conservative and that the shares still have downside risk. That view sits uneasily alongside the technical picture, where the break above the major moving averages suggests buyers have regained control for now.

The next quarterly report on 12 August will decide whether the recent rally has substance behind it. If the numbers show that the growing order book is beginning to feed through to revenue and margins, the recent advance could prove more than a trading burst. If not, or if the Canadian negotiations become more complicated, the stock’s sharp gains could quickly lose momentum.
