Shell’s Gas Ambitions Meet Buyback Discipline as LNG Canada Talks Take Shape

Shell’s share price is holding near the top of its range even as crude markets swing violently, leaving investors to weigh the company’s expanding gas bets against the steady drumbeat of shareholder returns.

Brent crude jumped as much as 5% on Thursday before retreating on Friday, with traders parsing reports of potential US-Iran ceasefire talks against continued Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia. Against that choppy backdrop, Shell’s stock changed hands at €41.94 in Friday’s session, a modest 0.3% decline on the day.

The central question for shareholders now is how management balances its payout commitments and cash generation against a pipeline of expensive new projects.

Trinidad Deal Locks In Long-Term Supply

On Wednesday, Shell reached an agreement with Trinidad and Tobago’s National Gas Company on terms for gas deliveries from the Aphrodite field. NGC chairman Gerald Ramdeen, cited by Reuters, said production is targeted to begin in the second quarter of 2027. A project of this kind reinforces Shell’s medium- and long-term production base.

Meanwhile, talks are reportedly underway over a final investment decision for an expansion of the LNG Canada Development project. The move could double the facility’s capacity to 28 million tonnes per year, though Shell has yet to confirm any decision. Should it proceed, the company would significantly extend its reach across the Asia-Pacific region.

Adding to the specialty earnings story, Shell Lubricants was reaffirmed as the global market leader in lubricants by Kline & Company’s latest market report.

XRG Circles a Stake in Canadian Terminal

Bloomberg reported Tuesday that Abu Dhabi’s XRG is in discussions to acquire an interest in the Shell-led LNG Canada export project. An external partner at the west-coast liquefaction terminal could free up additional capital and broaden the international partner base.

Bringing in outside investors fits Shell’s broader realignment. The energy major is concentrating on profitable core gas ventures while shedding peripheral operations to sharpen capital allocation. Shared ownership also lightens the financial load on capital-intensive megaprojects.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Shell?

Divestments and Buybacks Reinforce the Payout Case

On the selling side, Shell has been busy. Constellation Energy agreed on 10 September to take full ownership of RISEC Holdings from Shell Energy North America subsidiary for $715 million. Shell also completed the sale of Gulf of America production interests on Tuesday, raising roughly $840 million in cash.

Those proceeds shore up financial flexibility while keeping shareholders in the frame. For investors, the pattern underscores the strict capital discipline with which management reviews existing assets for returns.

A significant slice of that capital heads straight back to owners. On 18 September, Shell repurchased about 1.95 million of its own ordinary shares for cancellation, transacting through the London and Amsterdam venues under the buyback programme announced on 30 July. Cancelling the stock shrinks the share count, giving earnings per share a mathematical lift. The steady repurchase of its own shares has been a dependable pillar of the distribution strategy for several quarters.

Analyst Views and Valuation Limits

The operational moves are drawing attention in the market. RBC Capital on Tuesday maintained its “Hold” rating on Shell with a price target of £40.00. Bank of America had already lifted its target to 3,550 GBp on 8 September.

The analysts’ calls reflect expectations that Shell can defend margins in its gas and oil businesses even when commodity prices wobble. At the same time, room for near-term re-rating after recent gains looks limited.

The shares remain in robust shape. At €42.20, the stock sits 1.6% below its 52-week high, with a year-to-date gain of 35%. The gap to that 52-week peak of €42.88 stands at 2.2%.

Two Paths Ahead

The coming weeks present a split picture. As long as the quote holds above recent consolidation levels, market confidence in the diversified portfolio’s earning power should prevail, with ongoing cash inflows from portfolio clean-ups supporting the price.

If oil market sentiment shifts on a sustained easing of geopolitical tensions, however, pressure on the valuation would build. The next concrete catalyst for investors is the pending decision on doubling capacity at LNG Canada. A positive call, executed without significant cost overruns, would give the gas growth story a solid foundation. Should management hesitate, or should rising spending profiles weigh on return expectations, shareholders should brace for a period of re-rating.
