Power Lines, Not Chips, Are Now AI’s Bottleneck

Dear readers,

We called Nvidia’s earnings the definitive stress test for AI spending, and that test arrives Wednesday. But the past few days delivered a preview of a different kind of pressure — one that has nothing to do with semiconductors and everything to do with the physical grid required to run them. Add a fresh trade skirmish on the northern border and a crypto market where even the biggest bulls are quietly stockpiling cash, and the structural story of this market is being written well outside the major indices.

The Rally, and the Whale Building a Cash Pile

Bitcoin has climbed 24 percent over the past 30 days and now trades around $79,221 — a continuation of the short-squeeze dynamic we flagged over the weekend, only with more durable fuel behind it this time. U.S. spot ETFs pulled in $1.92 billion last week alone, and political tailwinds are adding to the momentum: World Liberty Financial, the crypto venture tied to the Trump family, received a preliminary bank charter from the OCC after a 220-day review.

Look past the headline number, though, and the picture gets more interesting. MicroStrategy, the software company that built its identity on relentless bitcoin accumulation, sold roughly $2 billion of its own stock last week. Historically, that money would have gone straight into more coin. This time, nearly $1.6 billion of it landed in a newly created “USD Cash” reserve instead. When the market’s most committed bitcoin buyer starts hoarding dollars near $80,000 rather than doubling down, that’s not noise — it’s a tell. Investors rebalancing into this rally should take the hint and keep a real cash buffer alongside crypto exposure, not just for opportunity, but for the volatility that tends to follow moves this fast.

The Real AI Bottleneck: The Grid Can’t Keep Up

While the market fixates on chip margins, the actual constraint on the AI buildout is showing up in substations and transmission lines. Ireland offers the starkest example: data centers already consumed 23 percent of the country’s total electricity last year, and demand growth is now forcing officials to reconsider the nation’s long-standing ban on nuclear power. In New York, 38 pending data center projects are requesting a combined 11,900 megawatts — a number so large it pushed Governor Kathy Hochul to impose a moratorium in mid-July on any new facility above 50 megawatts. Texas, meanwhile, has paused buildout of key transmission lines even as demand in its West Zone grows at a double-digit clip.

For portfolios, this reshuffles where the “second-order” AI trade actually sits. The binding constraint on Microsoft, Google, and Meta is shifting away from chip supply and toward grid interconnection — a bottleneck no GPU roadmap can fix. That points capital toward high-voltage direct current transmission specialists, data-center cooling technology, and the utilities and grid operators actually building out capacity. Right now, those names often trade at more reasonable multiples than the software companies riding the same AI wave.

Waiting on Nvidia, While Hardware Costs Climb

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nvidia?

Nvidia itself remains the market’s anchor, and the calm before Wednesday’s Q2 2026 report feels unusually tense. The stock trades at €184.50 in European sessions, up a comfortable 15 percent year-to-date. But one detail buried in forward guidance deserves attention: cost projections for 2027 show AI server prices rising more than 15 percent.

That kind of cost inflation is already reshaping buyer behavior. Alphabet is deepening its partnership with Marvell Technology to build custom silicon for its own TPU ecosystem, a move aimed squarely at reducing dependence on outside GPUs. Nvidia’s near-term dominance isn’t in question. But the fact that its biggest customers are actively building their own escape routes tells investors something: the semiconductor trade needs to be broader than one stock. Custom-chip specialists like Marvell offer a hedge against Nvidia’s pricing power that didn’t exist a year ago.

A Trade War Breaks Out Closer to Home

While markets watch for potential U.S. sanctions on Iran and their impact on oil, a separate and more immediate risk is building on America’s own border. As of this weekend, the U.S. is charging 50 percent tariffs on roughly $20 billion of Canadian imports — paper, alcohol, and dairy products among them. Canada has already announced retaliatory measures set to take effect in early September.

The timing is awkward. When incoming Fed Chair Kevin Warsh delivers his first Jackson Hole address on Friday, he’ll need to speak not just to resilient domestic demand but to the inflationary drag these tariffs could add to the economy. For investors, that’s a real risk to the rate-cut narrative that’s carried markets for months: imported inflation from a trade dispute nobody was pricing in could complicate the Fed’s path just as it looked to be clearing.

The Takeaway

Nvidia’s earnings and Warsh’s Jackson Hole debut will dominate headlines this week, but the more durable positioning is happening elsewhere right now — in the utilities and grid-equipment names catching up to AI’s real constraint, and in the cautious cash-hoarding of crypto’s biggest holders. Both are quiet signals that the easy phase of this trade is behind us.

Best regards,
