Silver’s Two-Front Battle: Geopolitical Sparks and Fed Signals Keep the White Metal Pinned

Silver traders have spent the past fortnight whipsawed between a Middle East flashpoint and the Federal Reserve’s tightening rhetoric, with the white metal lurching in both directions yet ultimately failing to break out of a range that has held for months.

The most recent session saw spot silver climb 2.5% to close at $67.58 per ounce, a rebound that followed an attack by US forces on an island in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s retaliatory strikes on the United Arab Emirates and Jordan sent oil prices higher for a second consecutive session, while President Trump’s suggestion that a “very severe attack” on Iran would not last long added further fuel to the precious metals bid.

That geopolitical premium, however, is colliding head-on with monetary policy signals. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, speaking at the Jackson Hole symposium, stressed the central bank still has “work to do” until it gains confidence that inflation is returning to its 2% target. The hawkish undertone initially weighed on silver, given that higher rates diminish the appeal of yield-free bullion assets.

Yet the macro picture is far from one-directional. The ADP report showed the US private sector added just 38,000 jobs in August — the weakest increase since January and well short of the 47,000 economists had penciled in. A cooling labor market argues against further tightening, providing a floor under prices.

A Market That Moves Fast but Goes Nowhere

The volatility has been striking. Just days before the latest geopolitical rally, silver had been caught in a sharp downdraft, sliding to $64.46 per ounce as global bond yields spiked and precious metals broadly came under selling pressure. At one point, the metal shed more than 3% in a single session, followed by a 2.46% daily decline before stabilizing around the $64 mark.

Wednesday’s recovery to $65.93 — a 2.0% daily gain — was attributed to a softer US dollar and positioning ahead of the jobs data. But even after the subsequent push to $67.58, silver remains down 1.7% on the week. The monthly picture tells a more constructive story, with prices up 5.9%, suggesting the broader uptrend has not been derailed despite the recent turbulence.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Silber Preis?

Market participants note that silver has been trapped in a tight band between $66 and $70 for months. The current price sits squarely within that corridor, even as 30-day volatility readings of 37% signal considerable nervousness beneath the surface. Investors read this as a market that, despite a barrage of conflicting headlines, has yet to make a decisive directional call.

The Structural Story Beneath the Noise

Strip away the daily headline risk, and a longer-running narrative continues to underpin the market. The latest World Silver Survey from the Silver Institute and Metals Focus projects a global supply deficit of 46.3 million ounces for 2026, widening from 40.3 million ounces the prior year.

Mine supply is forecast at 844.1 million ounces, while demand — despite an expected pullback in industrial and jewelry consumption — is set to remain robust. Physical investment is projected to climb 18%, with recycling expected to rise 7%. That combination of softer industrial appetite and strong investor interest helps explain some of the jitteriness in the futures market, where short-term rate and currency swings land on a fundamentally tight tape.

A silver ETF has also recorded modest inflows recently, a sign that institutional investors are holding their positions despite the crosscurrents of Fed policy and Middle East tensions.

Two Forces, No Resolution

For now, the metal finds itself caught between opposing gravitational pulls. Geopolitical risk argues for higher prices; a restrictive Fed argues for lower ones. So long as those forces remain roughly balanced, silver looks set to stay within its established trading range — even if individual sessions, as this week has demonstrated, can deliver sharp swings in either direction.

The disconnect between the weak weekly performance and the more resilient monthly figure underscores just how far apart short-term sentiment and longer-term fundamentals have drifted. The upcoming US jobs data should remain the near-term catalyst, though it will do little to alter the structural scarcity that continues to define this market.
