Thyssenkrupp’s Double Play: A Furnace Goes Dark While Its CEO Steps Onto Europe’s Hydrogen Stage

There is a certain symmetry to what is happening at Thyssenkrupp right now. One hand is taking production offline in Duisburg, tightening the very steel market the company depends on. The other is reaching for influence in Brussels, positioning the conglomerate at the heart of Europe’s clean-energy transition. Both moves, taken together, tell the story of a company trying to manage its present and its future at the same time.

The present is steel. Thyssenkrupp Steel began a planned partial overhaul of blast furnace 2 in Duisburg on September 2, taking the unit offline for roughly six weeks to stabilise pig iron production. On its own, that is routine maintenance. But market observers have been quick to connect the downtime to tighter material availability across Northern Europe, where steel prices have been firming. In a sector long plagued by overcapacity, a little self-imposed restraint can do wonders for the pricing environment — even when the restraint comes from your own production schedule.

The future is hydrogen. Miguel López, Thyssenkrupp’s chief executive, has been elected president of Hydrogen Europe, the continent’s main industry association for the sector, with a term running until June 2029. The appointment carries no immediate financial weight, but it signals where the company wants to be seen heading: away from its identity as a pure cyclical steelmaker and toward something that resembles an industrial transformation play with clean-energy ambitions.

Investors have been rewarding that narrative with unusual enthusiasm. On Friday, the shares jumped 6.0 percent to close at EUR 15.20, leaving them just 0.7 percent below the 52-week high of EUR 15.30. The stock has now gained 63 percent over the past twelve months — a rally that far exceeds what any single operational announcement would normally generate. The distance from the 200-day moving average has stretched to 44 percent, a measure of just how far the shares have run ahead of their medium-term baseline. A relative strength index of 68.8 suggests the stock is technically overbought, raising the question of how much of the hydrogen-and-steel-price story is already in the price.

Two major banks added fuel to the fire on Friday. BofA lifted its price target from EUR 19 to EUR 22, explicitly citing a credible path to higher profitability through restructuring and the possibility of a partial separation of the steel business. Deutsche Bank Research followed with an increase of its own, moving the target from EUR 16 to EUR 18 while confirming its Buy rating. Two houses, two near-simultaneous upgrades — a pattern that suggests the restructuring thesis is gaining credibility with the sell side rather than merely riding sentiment.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Thyssenkrupp?

The Deutsche Bank move landed almost exactly alongside the Duisburg maintenance news, a coincidence that at least illustrates how analyst optimism and market narrative are currently pointing in the same direction.

Not everything has been smooth. Alongside Rheinmetall, RENK and HENSOLDT, Thyssenkrupp recently came under pressure after media reports raised questions about defence projects and quality issues across the sector. That weakness was a peer-group phenomenon rather than a company-specific problem, but it serves as a reminder of how strongly collective narratives in the defence and industrial space can move individual share prices these days. Earlier in the week, on September 1 and 2, the stock also softened, which market commentary attributed to the broader steel sector and a preceding rally in the TKMS environment.

The López appointment adds a political dimension to the story that the price targets do not capture. By taking the helm of Hydrogen Europe, the CEO is signalling that Thyssenkrupp intends to shape the regulatory and policy framework around hydrogen, not merely respond to it. Symbolism does not replace a balance sheet, but it does flank the equity story that analysts are currently working with — and it strengthens the case that the transformation narrative is being pursued with genuine intent rather than just presented to investors.

The strategic question for shareholders is whether Thyssenkrupp can complete the transition from cyclical steel producer to diversified industrial group with credible hydrogen and defence operations without one leg of the business undermining the other. The Duisburg shutdown is a small test case: when the furnace restarts, the market will see whether steel prices hold without the support of reduced supply. The 52-week-high proximity suggests optimism is running high. Whether the rally has lasting power, or merely reflects a snapshot in a structurally challenged sector, may well depend on what happens when those 60 days are up.
