Novo Nordisk’s Squeezed Middle: Price Concessions and a Fast-Moving Rival Test Investor Patience

The Danish pharmaceutical giant finds itself in an uncomfortable position these days: advancing on multiple regulatory fronts while its share price treads water, caught between political pressure in its most lucrative market and a competitor that keeps stealing first-mover advantages.

At €40.09, the stock closed Friday down 1.8 percent, leaving it roughly 27 percent below its 52-week high of €54.86 set in late January. Year-to-date losses stand at 8.9 percent, widening to 17 percent over twelve months. The equity is hovering near its 200-day moving average of €40.16, with a relative strength index of 48.2 — territory that signals neither oversold nor overbought conditions.

The Cost of Keeping America’s Door Open

The central drag on the company’s growth narrative stems from concessions made in the United States. Novo Nordisk agreed in November to cut US prices for its semaglutide products, with Ozempic and Wegovy set to retail at $350 per month through Medicare, Medicaid, and a direct-to-consumer channel branded TrumpRx. Its insulin products, NovoLog and Tresiba, are slated for $35 monthly via the same platform.

These reductions safeguard access to a critical market but erode margins in what has historically been the company’s core growth engine. The pricing reality marks a notable shift for a firm that long defended premium pricing through innovation — now forced into discounts that would have seemed unthinkable just a short while ago.

A Rival That Keeps Moving First

Competitive pressure compounds the pricing headache. Eli Lilly secured US approval last Friday for Mounjaro to reduce cardiovascular risk in high-risk Type-2 diabetes patients, a label expansion that intensifies the battle for the GLP-1 franchise. Days earlier, on August 24, Lilly launched its oral weight-loss pill Foundayo in Britain — seizing the first European market for an oral GLP-1 treatment before Novo Nordisk had even secured European Commission approval for its own Wegovy tablet, despite a positive recommendation from the EMA.

Novo Nordisk did manage to bring its Wegovy tablet to market in Germany on Tuesday of this week, making it the first EU country to receive the oral version. The launch was widely framed as a response to Lilly’s European push, with the company’s capital markets day on September 21 looming as the next major catalyst.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?

The market’s reaction to the German debut was notably muted — Friday’s 1.8 percent decline hardly suggests enthusiasm, even amid ostensibly positive news flow.

China’s Promise, Without a Timeline

In Asia, the company submitted a marketing application for the oral Wegovy version to Chinese regulators in late August, and the country’s drug authority has accepted the filing. Novo Nordisk declined to provide a timeline for potential approval, leaving investors to weigh the significance of a market with one of the world’s largest patient populations for obesity and diabetes treatments against the absence of concrete milestones.

Analysts Split Down the Middle

The professional consensus appears fractured. Deutsche Bank downgraded the stock to Sell in late August, cutting its price target to 265 Danish kroner, citing underwhelming quarterly results and a cautious outlook. Citi reaffirmed its own Sell rating with the same 265-krone target earlier this month, pointing to slowing GLP-1 prescription trends. JPMorgan, meanwhile, raised its target to 275 kroner while maintaining a Neutral stance, citing improved long-term growth expectations for the GLP-1 segment following management discussions.

With annualized volatility at 41 percent, the chart offers little directional clarity. The stock has been oscillating around its moving averages for weeks, reflecting a market that cannot decide whether operational progress — the German pill launch, the Chinese filing — outweighs structural headwinds from US pricing pressure and an aggressive competitor that has proven faster in Europe.

The September 21 investor day now carries outsized importance. Management will need to articulate a convincing growth strategy to bridge the gap between the bears’ concerns about margin compression and prescription slowdowns, and the bulls’ hopes for the oral GLP-1 opportunity to reignite expansion. Until then, the equity appears destined to remain in its current holding pattern — with China’s regulatory review serving as a potential catalyst that could arrive at any time, or not at all.
