Vulcan Energy’s Ludwig Math Is Compelling — The Market Needs More Than Numbers

The gap between engineering milestones and share-price performance at Vulcan Energy has rarely been wider. The lithium-geothermal developer has just delivered a feasibility study for its second German project that ticks nearly every technical box, yet the stock continues to trade at levels that suggest investors are waiting for something far more tangible than a spreadsheet.

That something is capital — and, more specifically, the identity of the partners willing to provide it.

The Ludwig blueprint in numbers

The preliminary feasibility study for Ludwig, unveiled last Thursday, sketches out a project that would require €1.26 billion in capital expenditure to produce 21,100 tonnes of battery-grade lithium carbonate annually over a 30-year mine life. Total output across the project’s lifetime is projected at roughly 517,000 tonnes.

The resource picture has improved markedly alongside the engineering work. Indicated lithium mineral resources jumped 91 percent to 1.25 million tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent, with a further 2.23 million tonnes classified as inferred. The development would also generate around 3,125 gigawatt-hours of renewable heat each year, with estimated C1 operating costs of €4,101 per tonne of lithium carbonate.

Ludwig sits roughly 60 kilometres north of Lionheart, the company’s flagship project in the Upper Rhine Valley, and represents the second leg of a strategy that pairs lithium extraction with geothermal power generation.

There is, however, a sequencing condition attached to Ludwig’s future. A final investment decision will not be made until Lionheart is built and running commercial production — a milestone the company’s economic model currently places in 2029. Lionheart itself is targeted for commercial output in 2028.

A shareholder register in flux

While the technical picture has been firming up, the ownership structure has been moving in less reassuring directions. Citigroup Global Markets Australia and associated Citi entities stepped back as substantial shareholders roughly a month ago, a retreat that has coincided with a 2.6 percent decline in the share price since the disclosure.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Vulcan Energy?

Around the same time, CEO Cristobal Moreno purchased shares in the company — an insider buy that markets typically read as a vote of confidence from the top. The subsequent 11.5 percent slide in the stock suggests that signal has yet to resonate with the broader investment community.

The board has also seen movement in its performance-rights structure. Moreno forfeited 34,775 performance rights at the end of July, while 18,725 additional rights vested following successful testing — the kind of milestone-linked vesting events common across resource developers with multi-year project timelines.

State Street, meanwhile, has increased its stake in the company over the past few weeks, adding a counterpoint to the Citi exit.

The market’s verdict

The share price response to the Ludwig study has been muted at best. The stock closed Friday at €1.66, up 1.4 percent on the day — a modest gain that arrived several days after the study’s release rather than in immediate reaction to it.

That leaves the shares roughly 60 percent below the 52-week high of €4.15 set on 15 October, and down 35 percent since the start of the year. The 50-day moving average of €1.73 sits just above the current price, a technical signal that any recovery remains fragile.

Vulcan Energy’s market capitalisation currently stands at approximately €777 million.

The company is pursuing project-level financing for Ludwig, with government support programmes potentially playing a role, and continues to court strategic partners. Until those conversations produce named backers and binding commitments, the disconnect between the strength of the technical data and the weakness of the share price is likely to persist. The feasibility study is a necessary document in the fundraising process — but for a market that has watched the stock shed more than a third of its value this year, it is not, on its own, a sufficient one.
