A Strategic Shift: Almonty Industries Appoints Former US General to Lead Operations

Almonty Industries is undergoing a significant strategic and personnel transformation. The company is moving beyond its traditional role as a raw materials supplier to position itself as a crucial security partner for the US defense industrial base. This geopolitical pivot has been underscored by a high-profile executive appointment, raising questions about whether this move can bridge the gap between the current share price and the substantial targets set by analysts.

A New Front in the Supply Chain Battle

The recruitment of retired US Brigadier General Steven L. Allen as Chief Operating Officer sends a powerful message to both markets and policymakers. This appointment signifies a profound strategic shift for the miner. General Allen brings not traditional corporate management experience, but deep expertise in logistics. His primary mandate is the optimization of global tungsten supply chains.

His specific responsibilities include streamlining output from the flagship Sangdong mine in South Korea and the Panasqueira operation in Portugal, while also accelerating development at the Molybdenum project. Bringing a former high-ranking military officer on board highlights Almonty’s intensified focus on supply security for Western allies—a critical consideration in an era of heightened geopolitical tensions.

Building a Western Tungsten Alternative

This strategic direction is being backed by concrete operational steps. The company has finalized the acquisition of the Gentung Browns Lake project in Montana, USA, for approximately $9.75 million. This acquisition is part of an accelerated plan to reduce reliance on Chinese tungsten sources.

The timeline for the US expansion is ambitious:
* Production Start: Targeted for the second half of 2026
* Target Output: Approximately 140,000 MTU of tungsten oxide per year

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Almonty?

The cornerstone of Almonty’s strategy remains the Sangdong mine. Once fully ramped up, it is projected to supply over 80% of Western tungsten production. Given soaring demand from the defense sector, such a dominant market position presents a compelling case for a fundamental re-rating of the company’s value.

Substantial Upside Potential Suggested

Despite these foundational advances and the prospect of rising NATO defense budgets—forecast to reach €2.2 trillion by 2035—the company’s share price has yet to reflect this potential. As tungsten becomes indispensable for ammunition and heavy weaponry, a clear disconnect appears to exist between the firm’s market valuation and its underlying strategic value.

With shares currently trading around 7.00 CAD (market capitalization approximately 1.5 billion CAD), analyst price targets point to significant upside:

  • Oppenheim Research: Price target of 12.00 CAD
  • Sphene Capital: Price target of 13.50 CAD

Is the current period of consolidation merely the calm before the storm? Investors are assessing a scenario where geopolitical imperatives intersect with what appears to be an undervalued equity. The combination of the US acquisition, the imminent production ramp-up in South Korea, and the new “general in the boardroom” provides the essential ingredients for a potential market reassessment.
