AI’s Net Effect on Jobs Is Positive, New Nomura Analysis Shows

The fear that artificial intelligence will trigger mass unemployment may be overstated. A fresh report from investment bank Nomura, released on August 10, 2026, concludes that AI systems are, on balance, creating more jobs than they eliminate.

Economists Sonal Varma and Si Ying Toh built the Nomura report around case studies from Asian markets spanning 2022 through August 2026. India took center stage in their analysis, with the researchers identifying a net gain of 51,000 positions there attributable to AI adoption.

The hiring push is concentrated in niche fields — AI development, data labeling and prompt engineering — while model training and AI governance are gaining traction as disciplines in their own right. India’s healthcare, retail, manufacturing and BFSI (banking, financial services and insurance) sectors are the primary beneficiaries, according to the economists.

German workers report big weekly time savings

On the operational side, an Adobe survey of 1,500 German employees conducted in April 2026 sheds light on how the technology is actually being used. Sixty-seven percent of respondents said AI saves them up to 8 hours of work per week. Document creation and editing tops the list of use cases at 29 percent, followed by translation services at 28 percent. Data security concerns were voiced by 26 percent of participants.

The positive net picture from Nomura doesn’t tell the whole story, though. Industry observers point to analyses suggesting up to 92 million jobs worldwide could be displaced by AI, even as the technology upgrades existing roles. A separate study from the University of Pittsburgh found a possible correlation between rising AI-related job postings and slower overall headcount growth at affected companies.

IT sector sees winners and losers

Germany’s IT labor market is already feeling the shift. The Hays skilled-worker index for the second quarter of 2026 shows overall demand for IT specialists dropped 37 points to 59 (baseline Q1 2015=100). SAP developers took a particularly hard hit, with their index falling 109 points to 196, while IT-security roles declined 136 points to 373.

Database developers, by contrast, are riding the wave. Demand for them climbed 9 points to 322. All of this is happening against a stable national employment picture — the Federal Statistical Office put Germany’s July 2026 unemployment rate at 6.4 percent.

Four-day week and basic income experiments show promise

Productivity gains from AI are also fueling conversations about alternative working arrangements. A four-day-week trial involving 45 German companies, overseen by the University of Münster, reported steady revenues alongside a 62 percent drop in burnout cases. Across the Channel, more than 90 percent of British firms that piloted the model have kept it permanently.

Germany also wrapped up a three-year basic-income pilot that touched on social stability. Project organizers said no mass layoffs occurred during the trial, and participants reported higher overall life satisfaction.
