Alibaba’s Dual Catalysts: Chip Unit IPO and AI Hardware Access

A fresh wave of optimism is building around Chinese e-commerce titan Alibaba, driven by two significant strategic developments. Reports of a planned public listing for its semiconductor division and regained access to crucial U.S. technology are reshaping the market’s view of the company’s competitive edge. As Alibaba continues its corporate overhaul, investors are weighing whether these moves can provide a lasting boost to its equity valuation.

Regained Access to Critical AI Chips

In a pivotal shift for its supply chain, Alibaba appears to have overcome a major hardware hurdle. Recent reports confirm that Chinese regulators have granted approval for domestic tech firms to proceed with preparing orders for Nvidia’s high-performance H200 GPUs. This legal pathway to acquiring these advanced chips substantially strengthens Alibaba’s position in the generative AI arena, potentially alleviating previous bottlenecks in computational power needed for training sophisticated models.

This operational capability is demonstrated by the traction of Alibaba’s proprietary AI application, “Qwen,” which now boasts over 100 million monthly active users. The app’s success is central to the company’s monetization strategy within the expanding AI-powered search market.

Strategic Move Toward a Chip Unit IPO

Aligning with its broader restructuring, Alibaba is reportedly preparing an initial public offering (IPO) for its AI chip subsidiary, T-Head. This strategic initiative aims to unlock embedded value within the conglomerate and decouple the capital-intensive hardware development from its core e-commerce and cloud businesses. In doing so, Alibaba is following a path similar to rival Baidu, which has analogous plans for its Kunlunxin chip unit.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Alibaba?

The spin-off presents a dual advantage for the parent company. It would allow T-Head to raise external capital, thereby reducing the direct financial burden on Alibaba’s balance sheet. Simultaneously, it enables Alibaba to maintain a strategic foothold in the critical semiconductor sector. Early indications from pre-market activity suggest investors are viewing this potential value-unlocking move favorably.

Market Sentiment and Technical Positioning

Institutional investor activity currently presents a mixed picture. While some major funds have taken profits, Norges Bank established a new position worth over $500 million. Analyst commentary, however, leans optimistic regarding the structural changes. Arete Research upgraded Alibaba’s stock to a “Buy” rating on January 20, assigning a price target of $190.

The market is now balancing the potential valuation uplift from the chip unit spin-off against recent share price weakness. The stock closed Friday’s session at €147.20, marking a decline of 3.54%. A Relative Strength Index (RSI) reading of 29.4 points to a technically oversold condition. The confluence of IPO potential and enhanced hardware availability is expected to provide the near-term catalysts necessary for a potential stabilization and recovery in the share price.
