Alphabet’s AI Momentum: A Multifaceted Surge Amidst Lofty Investment Plans

A series of recent developments from Alphabet Inc. suggests the tech giant is not merely participating in the artificial intelligence race but is actively accelerating its pace. Renewed investor optimism has been fueled by a significant model update, a strategic partnership in a key region, and supportive regulatory news. However, this positive sentiment unfolds against the backdrop of a substantial capital expenditure forecast for 2026, raising questions about the balance between growth and cost.

Regulatory Support and Infrastructure Ambitions

Beyond product announcements, external factors have provided additional lift. A 6:3 ruling by the US Supreme Court struck down former President Trump’s global tariffs enacted under a national emergency law. This decision buoyed shares of digital advertising companies, a sector where Alphabet is a dominant player given that advertising constitutes the bulk of its revenue.

Furthermore, reports of potential discussions regarding an investment of approximately $100 million in “Neocloud” provider Fluidstack have captured market attention. Such a move could enable Alphabet to broaden its AI chip and infrastructure ecosystem, a critical area for long-term competitiveness.

The Core Investor Debate: Sky-High Capex vs. Tangible Returns

Despite the positive catalysts, the central concern for shareholders remains unchanged: the scale of future investments. In early February, Alphabet reported strong financials for Q4 2025, including 18% revenue growth and a 30% increase in net profit. However, the company’s capital expenditure guidance for 2026, set between $175 billion and $185 billion—nearly double the 2025 level—initially unsettled the market.

The recent share price appreciation can be seen as a market recalibration. Focus is shifting back to a fundamental question: will the AI offensive translate into revenue-generating applications fast enough to outpace the rising cost base? The upcoming quarterly report, scheduled for April 23, 2026, will be a key milestone in this ongoing assessment.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Alphabet?

Accelerating Product Rollouts: Gemini 3.1 Pro Leads the Charge

A key driver of the recent market enthusiasm was the February 19th launch of Gemini 3.1 Pro (Preview). Google’s blog post positions it as the company’s most capable model to date for handling complex tasks, claiming it achieved a score of 77.1% on the ARC‑AGI‑2 test. This represents “more than double” the reasoning performance of its predecessor.

For investors, the specific metric is less critical than the underlying pattern it reveals: Alphabet is demonstrably increasing its release tempo. This update arrived just one week after the “Gemini 3 Deep Think” upgrade. Market participants widely interpret this rapid iteration as a signal that the company’s massive infrastructure investments are yielding tangible, market-ready product advancements rather than merely filling data centers.

Strategic Monetization: The Sea Ltd. Partnership in Southeast Asia

Announced on the same day, a new strategic collaboration between Google and Sea Ltd. aims to develop “agentic” AI tools within Sea’s extensive ecosystem, targeting its core platforms: the e-commerce giant Shopee, the gaming unit Garena, and the financial services arm Monee.

The partnership includes work on a joint “AI agentic shopping” prototype for Shopee and AI tools for game development at Garena. Notably, it also involves testing Google’s Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) through Monee. This protocol is designed to enable autonomous payment processes. For Alphabet, this deal represents a crucial monetization lever, moving AI from demonstration to a product embedded directly within large, active platforms.

Reflecting the improved sentiment, Alphabet’s shares closed Friday at €267.40, trading approximately 8.3% below their 52-week high. The path forward will continue to hinge on the tension between demonstrating visible AI revenue streams and partnerships on one side, and justifying record-breaking infrastructure investments on the other.
