Apple’s Strategic Pivot: The High-Stakes Bet on a Foldable iPhone

According to a recent AlphaWise survey, a significant 27% of iPhone users globally are highly interested in a foldable model from Apple, with that figure jumping to 40% among users in China. This substantial consumer appetite is translating into tangible financial projections. Analysts at Morgan Stanley estimate the product could generate between $40 billion and $60 billion in revenue within just the first 18 months of its launch, a forecast contributing to positive momentum for the company’s shares.

Financial Performance and Market Context

Apple’s exploration of a foldable device comes on the heels of robust financial results. The company posted a record fiscal first-quarter 2026 revenue of $143.8 billion, representing a 16% year-over-year increase. Notably, iPhone sales in China saw a 23% surge in the first nine weeks of the calendar year. This strength is occurring against a challenging backdrop for the broader smartphone industry. Research firm IDC anticipates a global market contraction of approximately 13% in 2026, largely attributed to rising costs for memory components. Despite this headwind, Morgan Stanley analysts project that Apple will be the sole major manufacturer to gain market share in the current environment.

A Dual-Tier Product Strategy

The company appears to be executing a clear two-pronged hardware strategy. On one front, it is targeting the entry-level segment with devices like the $599 iPhone 17e and the MacBook Neo. Simultaneously, it is laying the groundwork for a new ultra-premium category with its anticipated foldable iPhone. Market experts, including those at Bank of America, predict a launch price point between $2,000 and $2,500. Analyst Wamsi Mohan from the bank forecasts initial sales of 10 to 20 million units for the device, which is expected to feature an interior display measuring 7.7 to 7.8 inches and a thickness of under 10mm when closed.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Apple?

Software Updates and Analyst Sentiment

On the software side, Apple is poised to release the iOS 26.4 update, which will introduce features such as Genius Browse for Apple TV and compact tabs for the Safari browser on Mac. The company has also confirmed the dates for its WWDC 2026 developer conference, scheduled for June 8 through June 12, with the keynote address taking place on June 8.

Wall Street’s view of Apple’s equity remains favorable. Bank of America maintains a “Buy” rating with a $320 price target. Wedbush Securities holds an even more optimistic outlook, reiterating a $350 target and citing the firm’s artificial intelligence strategy and existing partnerships as key drivers. The current consensus among sell-side analysts stands at “Moderate Buy.”
