Consumer Strength Meets Bond Market Stress Ahead of Q4

Dear readers,

Yesterday’s newsletter tracked the leverage propping up this rally from beneath. Today the pressure comes from above: oil spiking on a hardened geopolitical stance, Treasury yields breaking through levels unseen since 2007, and a US consumer that, so far, refuses to blink.

Markets open the final week of the third quarter caught between those forces, with investor attention rotating away from pure infrastructure bets and toward companies that can actually prove earnings quality — in software, and at the cash register.

The Consumer Holds the Line

The fourth quarter is shaping up as the real test of the American shopper, and the early evidence favors the optimists. Adobe now projects record US online holiday sales of just over $275 billion this year, a solid 7% increase from 2025. Retailers aren’t waiting for December to fight for that spending: Amazon’s Prime Day promotions are already underway, dangling steep discounts in front of price-conscious buyers.

Walmart CEO John Furner, meanwhile, moved to shut down speculation that the company would use electronic shelf labels to adjust prices dynamically throughout the day. Anyone positioned for a consumer pullback has some rethinking to do — retailers with strong digital footprints look set to carry real weight into the holiday sprint.

Software’s Quiet Reshuffling

A subtler shift is underway in tech. Morgan Stanley now expects cloud infrastructure capital spending growth to cool markedly by 2028, with capital rotating up the stack into the application layer — where software companies will have to prove they’re worth their multiples rather than simply ride the buildout.

Zoom leaned into that shift in mid-September, unveiling an AI-powered sales tool built around its recent acquisition of Common Room. But the competitive squeeze from the platform giants is intensifying just as fast: HSBC downgraded Twilio, flagging roughly 25% downside risk on concern that Meta’s new digital assistant could render a chunk of Twilio’s services redundant.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Twilio?

The lesson for software investors is blunt — premium valuations now belong only to companies whose products can’t simply be swallowed by a foundation model.

Oil and Yields Test the Market’s Nerve

The macro backdrop hardened over the weekend. President Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and Brent crude pushed decisively above $100 a barrel in response. At the same time, the 10-year Treasury yield broke through 5.1%, its highest level since 2007. And yet global equities have barely flinched: the S&P 500 remains within a percentage point of its all-time high.

That resilience in the face of both an oil shock and a multi-year peak in borrowing costs suggests investors are, for now, weighting resilient growth more heavily than the risks brewing in the Middle East.

Nvidia’s Buyback Just Got Bigger Than Apple’s

Even as attention drifts toward software, the hardware giants are flexing their balance sheets. Nvidia’s board authorized an additional $150 billion in share buybacks, lifting the total program to $235 billion through fiscal year 2028 — a figure that now exceeds Apple’s own record-setting buyback plan from earlier this spring.

Shares climbed roughly 2% on Monday. A repurchase program of this scale is more than a vote of confidence in Nvidia’s cash generation; it effectively sets a floor under the stock.

The Takeaway

Strong holiday forecasts and a $235 billion buyback are real reasons for confidence. A 5.1% ten-year yield and $100 oil are real reasons for caution. Both are true at once, and the market’s job this week is to decide which matters more. Friday’s US jobs report will be the next real data point — and likely the one that tells the Fed, and the rest of us, which side of this balance is about to give way.

Best regards,
The StocksToday.com Editorial
