Deutz’s Two-Track Growth Story: A €1.9bn Defence Backlog and a New Alliance in Pune

The Cologne-based engine maker is no longer content with a single narrative. While investors have spent recent weeks digesting the mechanics of its biggest-ever acquisition, Deutz has quietly been laying the groundwork for growth in a far more familiar corner of its business: the combustion engine itself.

News emerged on Wednesday that Kirloskar Oil Engines, one of India’s largest powertrain manufacturers, has agreed to collaborate with Deutz on the R550 platform, a 1.6-litre engine concept. Neither side has disclosed production volumes or financial terms, but the pact extends Deutz’s reach into a market where demand for compact, efficient diesel power remains robust. It also signals that the company’s traditional engine franchise is being developed in parallel with its much larger defence ambitions — not sacrificed to them.

That defence play, of course, is the dominant force driving the share price. Deutz agreed in July to acquire FFG Flensburger Fahrzeugbau for roughly €1.6bn, funded through a mix of cash and newly issued shares. The target company, which specialises in armoured tracked and wheeled vehicles and supplies modules for the Leopard 2 battle tank, generated around €760m in revenue in 2025 and employs approximately 1,100 people across nine sites. Its customer base spans the German armed forces and more than 14 NATO nations. Crucially, FFG carries an order backlog of €1.9bn — a figure that will remain off Deutz’s balance sheet until the deal formally closes, expected between the end of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027.

The regulatory and shareholder hurdles have now been cleared. Germany’s Federal Cartel Office waved the transaction through in its preliminary review without conditions, citing the minimal overlap between the two companies’ operations. Days later, shareholders at an extraordinary general meeting approved a €600m capital increase against in-kind contributions with 99.7% support. The FFG’s owner families are set to become anchor shareholders with a stake of up to 29.9%.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutz?

None of this has gone unnoticed by the market. The stock closed Friday at €12.76, a mere 1.7% below its 52-week high of €12.98, reached at the end of August. Over the past 30 days, the shares have gained roughly 30%, and they have risen by half since the start of the year. On a 12-month view, Deutz is up 35%. The weekly figure tells a calmer story — a marginal 0.6% dip — reflecting that the sharpest moves have already occurred.

There is another signal that some market participants have read as a vote of confidence: a member of the supervisory board purchased company shares on Monday, a transaction that often carries symbolic weight in German corporate culture.

The underlying business, meanwhile, is providing a solid foundation for the integration work ahead. Deutz’s first-half results for 2026 showed revenue up 10.7% at €1.12bn, with adjusted EBIT climbing 43.1% to €79.7m — an adjusted margin of 7.1%. The first quarter had already hinted at the momentum: order intake surged 41.2% to €771m, while revenue grew 8.4% to €530m. Management has maintained its full-year guidance of €2.3bn to €2.5bn in revenue and an adjusted EBIT margin between 6.5% and 8.0%.

The next checkpoint arrives on 5 November, when Deutz publishes its nine-month results and hosts a conference call. That will offer investors a read on whether third-quarter momentum has held and whether any early signs of the FFG integration roadmap have emerged. Until the deal formally completes, however, the €1.9bn backlog remains a promise of future value rather than a present reality — a promise that, alongside the Kirloskar partnership, gives Deutz two very different engines of growth to watch.
