Japanese Bitcoin Firm Metaplanet Defies Strong Earnings with Share Price Plunge

In a surprising market development, shares of Japanese Bitcoin investment company Metaplanet tumbled more than 10% during today’s trading session, closing at 516 yen. This decline presents a puzzling contradiction to the company’s recently announced robust quarterly performance and strategic initiatives aimed at protecting shareholder value.

Impressive Quarterly Performance Overshadowed

Metaplanet’s third quarter 2025 results revealed extraordinary growth, prompting the company to double its full-year forecast. The Bitcoin Income Generation segment delivered record-breaking results, leading to a 100% upward revision in profit projections. The company now anticipates full-year 2025 revenue of 6.8 billion yen with operating profit expected to reach 4.7 billion yen.

Key performance metrics demonstrate remarkable strength:
* Bitcoin portfolio returns of 33.0% during Q3 2025
* Addition of 4,412 Bitcoin through options trading
* Quarterly revenue surge of 115.7% to 2.44 billion yen
* Total holdings of 30,823 Bitcoin, positioning Metaplanet as the world’s fourth-largest corporate holder

The company has already surpassed its annual target of 30,000 Bitcoin holdings ahead of schedule, making the market’s negative response particularly unexpected.

Strategic Shift in Equity Management

Addressing potential shareholder concerns about dilution, Metaplanet implemented a significant policy change. Between October 20 and November 17, 2025, the company will suspend the exercise of subscription rights for Series 20 through 22. These instruments had previously facilitated new share issuance to fund Bitcoin acquisitions.

This temporary halt represents a strategic pivot toward optimizing capital formation and enhancing long-term shareholder value. However, this move raises questions about how Metaplanet will sustain its aggressive Bitcoin accumulation strategy without this funding mechanism.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Red Planet Japan?

Expansion Continues Amid Market Volatility

Despite the stock’s recent weakness, Metaplanet continues to advance its corporate expansion. September 2025 marked the establishment of two new subsidiaries: Metaplanet Income Corp. in Miami and Bitcoin Japan Inc., coinciding with the acquisition of the bitcoin.jp domain.

This organizational development supports the company’s “Phase II” strategy, which focuses on creating complementary revenue streams without resorting to traditional equity dilution. The ambitious target remains the accumulation of 210,000 Bitcoin by 2027, representing approximately 1% of the total Bitcoin supply.

Market Behavior Contrasts with Fundamentals

The current price pressure contrasts sharply with Metaplanet’s impressive longer-term trajectory. Since the beginning of the year, the stock has advanced 48%, while twelve-month gains exceed 400%. This performance substantially outpaces the Nikkei 225 index, which has returned 11.67% over the same period.

Market experts maintain a price target of 2,400 yen for Metaplanet shares, though technical indicators suggest near-term challenges. The 52-week high of 1,930 yen appears distant currently, with chart analysts identifying a “Death Cross” pattern formation.

Attention now turns to November 17, 2025, when the suspension period concludes. The critical question remains whether Metaplanet will resume dilutive financing or identify alternative capital sources to fuel its Bitcoin acquisition strategy. Until the Q4 reporting in February 2026, the sustainability of Metaplanet’s Bitcoin business model will remain the central focus for investors.
