Japan’s Metaplanet Faces Investor Skepticism Despite Bitcoin Bet

Shares of Japanese investment firm Metaplanet are struggling to find stability following a dramatic 12.9% plunge on Monday, a decline that occurred despite the company releasing positive operational updates. The contradictory market reaction highlights growing investor concerns about the company’s aggressive cryptocurrency strategy.

CEO Simon Gerovich emphasized the company’s expanding investor base, noting that approximately 250,000 Japanese citizens—representing 0.2% of the country’s population—now hold shares in the Bitcoin-focused enterprise. This growing shareholder count contrasts sharply with the stock’s recent performance.

Market Reality Clashes with Corporate Strategy

The company’s fundamental position appears strong on paper. Metaplanet recently doubled its revenue forecast and successfully secured a $100 million loan backed by Bitcoin collateral. Management intends to use these funds for additional Bitcoin acquisitions and to support an extensive share buyback initiative.
