Meta Faces Deepening Regulatory Scrutiny in China Over AI Acquisition

Meta’s strategic push into artificial intelligence has encountered a significant and widening regulatory hurdle. Chinese authorities are expanding an investigation into the technology giant’s acquisition of AI startup Manus, transforming what began as a routine review into a comprehensive probe with potential implications for Meta’s core AI ambitions.

A Broadening Scope of Inquiry

Initially focused on potential breaches of technology export controls, the investigation’s scope has grown considerably. According to a Friday report from Bloomberg, regulators are now examining cross-border capital flows, tax accounting practices, and foreign investment compliance related to the deal.

The complexity stems from Manus’s origins. The startup was founded in China before relocating its headquarters and personnel to Singapore. Chinese officials are scrutinizing whether the transfer of technology and employees during this move required an export license—and if Meta secured the necessary approvals prior to the acquisition. While still considered preliminary, these deepening inquiries cast uncertainty over a key strategic purchase for Meta.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Meta?

A Critical Juncture for Strategy

This regulatory challenge emerges at a sensitive time for Meta. The company is channeling billions of dollars into artificial intelligence development, a capital-intensive strategy that has already prompted investor questions about rising expenditures. Acquisitions of promising AI firms like Manus were intended to bolster this roadmap and secure Meta’s competitive edge in generative AI.

Instead, a geopolitical complication now threatens to turn a seemingly straightforward technology deal into a source of risk. Some market analysts, including those at HSBC, maintain a “Buy” rating on Meta’s shares, citing the successful integration of AI into its advertising business. However, the expanding regulatory uncertainty may further fuel the stock’s volatility, which has been pronounced in recent months.

Investor Focus Turns to Earnings and Clarity

All eyes will be on Meta’s upcoming quarterly results, scheduled for release on January 28. Wall Street is expected to pay particular attention to the company’s expenditure forecast for 2026, following Meta’s prior announcements of significantly increased investment in AI infrastructure. Concurrently, any official statement from the company regarding the status of the Manus investigation will be closely parsed by the market. Until then, the ultimate depth and duration of the Chinese regulatory review remain unclear.
