The Japanese investment firm Metaplanet continues to position Bitcoin at the core of its corporate treasury activities, recently securing an additional $130 million in debt collateralized by its existing cryptocurrency holdings. Market response to this intensified accumulation approach has been cautiously optimistic.

Expanding Bitcoin Reserves Through Debt

On November 25, Metaplanet confirmed it had drawn down $130 million (approximately ¥20 billion) from its established $500 million credit facility. This transaction, finalized on November 21, represents the company’s latest move to leverage its digital asset portfolio for traditional financing.

Key transaction details include:

  • New borrowing: $130 million
  • Total facility utilization: $230 million
  • Collateral: Company-owned Bitcoin
  • Terms: Daily automatic rollover with flexible repayment features

Proceeds from this debt issuance are earmarked for additional Bitcoin acquisitions and general corporate purposes, including option strategies designed to generate yield.

Corporate Treasury Holds 30,823 Bitcoin

As of October 31, Metaplanet’s corporate treasury contained 30,823 Bitcoin, establishing the firm as a dominant player in Asia’s corporate digital asset space. Company management emphasizes that despite cryptocurrency volatility, their current loan-to-value ratio remains within conservative parameters. This substantial Bitcoin reserve enables access to low-cost fiat liquidity.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Metaplanet?

Share Price Shows Modest Gains

Contrary to speculative reports predicting significant price movements, Metaplanet shares have demonstrated relative stability. The stock closed yesterday’s session at ¥365, representing a modest 2.2% increase from its November 21 closing price of ¥357.

This measured market reaction suggests investors have either already priced in the aggressive Bitcoin strategy or await further evidence of successful capital deployment and earnings generation.

Strategic Dependence on Bitcoin Performance

Metaplanet’s approach of leveraging existing Bitcoin holdings rather than issuing new equity rests on the fundamental assumption that Bitcoin’s long-term appreciation will outpace borrowing costs. The company’s strategic roadmap includes:

  • Revenue generation: Deploying capital toward income-producing activities like Bitcoin option sales
  • Financial flexibility: Maintaining $270 million in remaining credit capacity for future acquisitions

The firm’s balance sheet health now remains inextricably linked to the performance of its 30,823 Bitcoin holdings. While the $130 million infusion provides immediate purchasing power, it simultaneously increases exposure to potential cryptocurrency market downturns.
