Microsoft’s Moment of Truth Meets a Fed Gone Quiet

Dear readers,

Yesterday we left you with a promise: Microsoft was about to find out, in front of the whole market, whether two years of AI infrastructure spending can actually convert into cash. That test lands today, and it arrives paired with a second one — a Federal Reserve decision from a new chair who has explicitly told markets to expect less guidance than they’re used to. Wall Street doesn’t often get two variables of this size resolved on the same afternoon.

Alphabet’s Numbers Set the Bar for Redmond

Microsoft’s report is the fulcrum of this entire earnings season, and the bar it has to clear was set — and complicated — by Alphabet last week. On paper, Alphabet’s headline EPS of $9.11 against a Street consensus of $2.87 looked like a blowout. Look past the number, though, and the picture gets murkier: $99.0 billion of that came from a net gain in other income, driven largely by unrealized gains on equity securities — an accounting windfall, not operating performance.

The underlying business was still genuinely strong. Consolidated operating income rose 30% to $40.8 billion, with margin expanding two full points to 34%. But the scale of the one-time gain matters for the whole index: Alphabet alone accounted for 92% of S&P 500 earnings growth over a recent five-day stretch. Strip the company out entirely, and the index’s EPS growth falls from a reported 37.9% to a far more pedestrian 25.9%. That’s the trap Microsoft now has to avoid — the market has seen what an accounting mirage looks like, and it will not accept one from Redmond. Investors want proof that AI is showing up in cloud subscription growth and software margins, not just in the size of the balance sheet.

Hardware Sprints Ahead, Software Still Owes an Answer

On the infrastructure side, the spending shows no signs of slowing. Network equipment maker Ciena is riding the AI networking boom, evidence that data center build-outs remain in full swing. But the chip sector beneath that spending is getting more crowded and more competitive by the week.

South Korea’s SK Hynix posted revenue of 79.3187 trillion won, up 257% year-over-year, with operating profit surging 557% and margins hitting 76% — numbers that not only shattered the company’s own records but pushed it past TSMC. At the same time, China is no longer content to watch from the sidelines: memory maker CXMT raised $8.6 billion on Shanghai’s STAR Market on July 27, in Asia’s largest IPO of the year, with total proceeds reaching $9.8 billion once the over-allotment option is included. That’s a direct shot at Samsung and Micron’s turf. For Microsoft shareholders, the takeaway cuts both ways: the hardware ecosystem underpinning AI is expanding at breakneck speed, which is good news for capacity — but it also raises the stakes on whether all that upfront capital finally shows up as durable cash flow rather than sunk cost.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Microsoft?

A Fed Chair Who’d Rather Not Explain Himself

Away from the earnings calendar, the other half of today’s double test sits with the Federal Reserve. The rate decision lands at 2:00 PM Eastern. Economists surveyed by FactSet expect the Fed to hold steady in a range of 3.5% to 3.75%, a call made easier by the annual inflation rate cooling to 3.5% in June. The complication is Kevin Warsh, the new Fed chair, who has made clear he intends to offer markets considerably less forward guidance than his predecessors did. That’s a deliberate choice, and it means investors will get little insight into his actual economic thinking today — a shift that injects real uncertainty into every rate-sensitive trade. CME FedWatch data put the odds of a rate hike at 35.8% as of Tuesday, hardly a consensus reading. The practical implication for portfolios: betting on the macro path has become considerably harder to do with conviction, which makes owning fundamentally sound individual businesses more important than it’s been in months.

Rheinmetall Shows What Beating Forecasts Looks Like

If you want a preview of how the market rewards genuine operational strength, Germany’s DAX offered one today. Rheinmetall posted Q2 2026 revenue up nearly 70% to €3.3 billion, with operating profit climbing to €562 million — comfortably ahead of the roughly €470 million analysts had modeled, powered by robust global defense demand. Shares jumped about 7.9% and vaulted to the top of the DAX. It’s a clean demonstration of what this market is currently paying for: real order backlogs and numbers that beat, not stories about future demand.

The Bottom Line

Bitcoin opened Wednesday at $63,853 and drifted up to around $64,244, essentially marking time ahead of the Fed, while oil continues to tick higher on Middle East tensions. None of that is where the real risk sits today. The combination of Warsh’s press conference this evening and Microsoft’s numbers after the bell will do more to set the tone for the rest of the summer than anything happening in crypto or energy markets right now. After Alphabet’s accounting-driven headline and a Fed chair who’s chosen to go quiet at the exact moment investors want clarity, the market has made its terms plain: it wants receipts, not narratives.

Best regards,
