A survey of medical students in Jordan has thrown fresh light on the physical toll of excessive video gaming, with those showing signs of addiction reporting dramatically higher rates of musculoskeletal discomfort than their peers. The findings, drawn from responses by 364 students and reported on September 2, 2026, zero in on how prolonged screen time and repetitive hand movements shape pain patterns in young adults training for demanding healthcare careers.

Of the total cohort, researchers identified 34 individuals — exactly 9 percent — as gaming-dependent. That subset became the focal point for comparing physical symptoms against the remaining 91 percent of participants, allowing the study authors to isolate how compulsive play habits correlate with aches in specific body regions.

The most striking disparity emerged in the neck. A full 85.3 percent of gaming-dependent students reported neck pain, versus 65 percent among the rest of the group. Upper back complaints followed a similar trajectory: 64.7 percent of the addicted cohort experienced discomfort there, compared to 55 percent of their non-addicted counterparts. These figures point to the cervical and thoracic spine as primary stress zones during marathon gaming sessions, where static posture and forward head positioning place sustained load on supporting muscles.

The musculoskeletal strain highlighted in this study mirrors what many employees experience daily in poorly assessed work environments. Identifying and documenting physical risks before they become chronic issues is a core duty for any organisation. Elbow pain produced the study’s most pronounced gap. Among gaming-dependent students, 41.2 percent suffered from elbow discomfort — more than triple the 12.5 percent rate seen in the broader study population. Wrist pain also skewed higher in the addicted group, with 41.2 percent reporting symptoms versus 34 percent of other participants.

The authors suggest the repetitive micro-movements and sustained grip required by controllers and touchscreens likely explain the upper-limb findings. For future physicians — a profession already associated with long hours and physical strain — the early onset of such complaints raises questions about cumulative health burdens later in life.

Ergonomic factors tied to handheld device use and gaming deserve greater attention in preventive health discussions, the research implies, particularly as screen-based leisure continues to expand across age groups. The study’s authors stop short of prescribing solutions, but the data offers a clear signal: the way young people play today may shape how their bodies feel for decades to come.
