PacWest Shares Continue Their Steep Decline Amid Sector Concerns

While the broader U.S. banking industry demonstrates surprising resilience, PacWest Bancorp stands out for its severe underperformance. The regional bank’s stock has plummeted approximately 70.88% over the past twelve months, with shares currently trading around $7.54. This stark decline highlights a significant reassessment of risk among investors, particularly toward institutions within the regional banking space.

FDIC Report Reveals Robust Banking Sector Health

Contrasting sharply with PacWest’s situation, the latest quarterly report from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) presents a strong picture for the industry. FDIC-insured institutions saw their net income surge to $79.3 billion, marking a substantial 13.5% increase compared to the previous quarter. This growth was primarily fueled by vigorous net interest income and reduced provisions for credit losses.

Key sector metrics from the report include:

  • Net Income: $79.3 billion (a 13.5% quarter-over-quarter increase)
  • Return on Assets (ROA): 1.27 percent
  • Deposit Growth: A fifth consecutive quarterly increase of $92.2 billion
  • Unrealized Losses: Declined to $337.1 billion

The industry’s total assets grew by $82.3 billion, and the number of problematic banks on the FDIC’s “Problem Bank List” decreased slightly to 57.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying PacWest?

Underlying Vulnerabilities Persist

Despite the encouraging aggregate data, the FDIC report cautions that underlying vulnerabilities remain. It specifically points to continued higher delinquency rates within the non-owner-occupied commercial real estate segment. The sector’s substantial, albeit reduced, unrealized losses of $337.1 billion underscore the persistent risk associated with interest rate fluctuations.

The critical question remains whether the industry can fully disentangle itself from these legacy issues. Ongoing challenges within certain loan portfolios continue to weigh heavily on banks with significant exposure to commercial real estate markets.

A Crisis of Confidence in PacWest

The dramatic 70.88% annual decline in PacWest’s share price signals a profound crisis of investor confidence. As the broader sector appears to stabilize, this regional lender has become a notable outlier. Market participants are currently subjecting regional bank balance sheets to intense scrutiny, where robust asset management and diversified revenue streams have become essential for survival. For PacWest, trust in these very fundamentals seems to have been deeply shaken, leaving its shares trading at levels that reflect a prolonged and severe downturn.
